Examples of Work Performed
Completes preventive maintenance on vehicles, trailers, or heavyequipment, such as oil changes, tire rotation, replacing filters,servicing transmissions, lubricating chassis and drive lines.Performs engine and transmission diagnostics with scan tools orlaptop computers. Requirements of Work
Thorough knowledge of all tools and equipment used in the trade andthe ability to use these tools to perform repair work onvehicles/equipment.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.Ability to weld and cut using gas or electrical equipment.Ability to read, interpret, and apply information contained intechnical repair manuals and electronic diagnostic equipment.Ability to climb onto equipment and make repairs as high as 25' inheight.Ability to lift, bend, and twist while making repairs to vehiclesand heavy equipment.Ability to tolerate exposure to fluids and solvents in vehiclerepair work.Ability to perform continuous manual and physical labor whilestanding on cement floor.Ability to lift and carry bulky objects weighing up to 50 pounds(heavier objects with the assistance of another person) fordistances up to 100 feetAbility to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools thattighten, loosen, or cut.Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships withassociates and employees of other departments.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally or in writing.Must be highly proficient in utilizing diagnostic scan tools andother troubleshooting devises.A valid Kansas driver's license is required.A valid Kansas commercial driver's license (CDL) is required.Compliance with ASE policy will be required at time of hire andthroughout duration of employment.Possession of at least three eligible ASE certifications when hired.Will require ASE certification attainment consistent with ASEpolicy.Preferred certifications from tracs A, E, L and T.Skill set will be the primary factor in determining hire, promotion,and transfer decisions between shops.There are five shops that specialize in the maintenance of heavyequipment, light vehicles, fire assets, body shop repairs, and lightequipment.Staff assigned to the Heavy Equipment shop shall have extensiveknowledge of diesel engines, as well as other equipment that ismaintained in this shop.Staff assigned to the Light Vehicle shop shall have extensiveknowledge of passenger vehicles and other assets that are maintainedin this shop.Staff assigned to the Fire Maintenance shop shall have exten iveknowledge of fire apparatus and maintenance practices.Staff assigned to the Body Shop shall have extensive knowledge ofthe repair of vehicles damaged in accidents.Staff assigned to the Light Equipment shop shall have extensiveknowledge of mowers, park maintenance equipment, and other assetsthat are maintained in this shop.Transfer decisions between these shops will be based on skill set,shop coverage, work flow, and the overall needs of the Division.An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safetyof other individuals in the workplace.Public Works Utilities is responsible for the operation of manycritical systems, such as water and wastewater treatment, theCity's transportation network, and more. Therefore, PWU employeesare the first responders in many emergency situations. When anemergency is declared by the Department Director, or designee, allemployees may be required to work in preparation, response, orrecovery activities related to the stated emergency.
