The project involves modeling, simulating and designing lattice materials featuring the ability to focus stresses along specially engineered domain walls under loading, thus exhibiting topological protection against damage and fracture. The project also involves fabricating and testing prototypes of lattice metamaterials with the above mentioned characteristics. Successful candidates should have a BA and advanced coursework in civil, mechanical, aerospace engineering, materials science, or a related field. The candidates must have strong backgrounds in solid mechanics, finite element simulations (linear and non-linear) and static and dynamic experimental characterization of mechanical metamaterial prototypes. Also of importance are communication skills and being able to work with the senior investigator, graduate students, and undergraduate students. In addition, the postdocs will be required to: (1) generate results in a timely manner for sharing with other members of the team; (2) attend and participate in meetings with collaborators; (3) supervise graduate and undergraduate students who are also working on the project; (4) write reports and present seminars; and (5) prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals. The position is available on or after February 1, 2024. The initial appointment will be for five months and is renewable, pending renewed availability of funding and satisfactory progress. Submit a statement of interest, career goals, CV, and the names and contact information of three references. Job Duties: 20% Development of theoretical models of lattices exhibiting topologically protected stress-focusing and topological protection against fracturing 30% FEM simulations of topological lattices under different static and dynamic loading conditions 10% Design and manufacturing of prototypes 25% Static experiments on lattice prototypes using digital image correlation (DIC) 15% Dynamic experiments on lattice prototypes using laser vibrometry Qualifications Required qualifications: * BS in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science or a related field * Experience with (i) linear and non-linear finite element simulations of lattice materials; and (ii) static and dynamics experiments on mechanical metamaterial prototypes. * An ability to work independently and as part of a team Preferred qualifications include: * Experience with theoretical principles of topological mechanics * Experience with Matlab and Mathematics coding * Experience with digital image correlation and laser vibrometry testing About the Department The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering resides within the College of Science & Engineering.
