The establishment of Columbia as an educational leader and the partnership with NYP-a sophisticated, multi-hospital health system-will drive the growth and potential for development of the Pediatric Residency Program in the Office of Medical Education Diversity and Inclusion (OMEDI).
The next Program Director will arrive at a pivotal time in the history of the Vagelos College of Physician and Surgeons and the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. The candidate will have an extraordinary opportunity to take advantage of both institutions' commitments to create an inclusive and innovative learning environment for graduate medical education learners. CUIMC has a state-of-the-art simulation center and program with opportunities to expand programming for Pediatric Residents. The candidate will be a leader in OMEDI, leading the residency team in the training of Pediatric Residents and partnering with divisions and faculty in training residents and fellows. The Pediatric Program Director will work with the Vice Chair for Education, Associate Vice Chair for Education, Diversity and Inclusion and Associate Vice Chair for Education and the Learning Environment to ensure inclusive learning environments and that anti-racist values are prioritized in all of our training programs. The Pediatric Program Director will also work closely with the Director of Fellowships to ensure communication and overlap with the Graduate Medical Education Office as well as the fellowship training program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Pediatric Residency Program Director (PD) will support and partner with all educational stakeholders to create a learning environment that promotes growth and development of our Pediatric Resident Learners. The primary responsibility of the PD will be to oversee the Columbia/NYP categorical Pediatric Residency Program. The PD will ensure all educational activities and educational initiatives are rooted in a learner-centric framework using the lens of adult learning theory and with a foundation of support. The Program Director's specific responsibilities are as follows:
Active participation with NYP GME office and governanceEnsure ACGME accreditation for the Pediatric Residency Program including compliance with all regulatory requirementsEstablish continuous program improvement (short term and long term) of the Pediatric Residency Program that includes the1) development of an Annual Program Evaluation Performance and Improvement Plan (APEI)
2) workplan that creates accountability for completion of annual goals and objectives by appointed individuals, teams or divisions
-Ensure eligibility for the American Board of Pediatrics for all Pediatric Residents-Develop and maintain a curriculum for board examination preparationOversee the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) for all 3 years of residency to ensure appropriate development of skills; appoint CCC members that have knowledge about the program and milestones and keep up to date in these areasDirect the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) and ensure that members from the faculty and residency are representedLead all aspects of recruitment for the categorical Pediatric Residency Program annuallyWork collaboratively with Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Genetics and the Physician Scientist Development Training Programs to recruit to these residency programs.Oversee mentoring programs for all three years of residencyDesign and implement a career development program to prepare residents for future planning in subspecialty fellowship or job placement.Work with the Associate Program Directors to ensure that all core rotations, electives and longitudinal continuity clinic experiences are appropriately updated.Ensure that all residents meet individually with Residency Program leadership twice a year to review program requirements and expectations as well as set learning goals and plansEnsure that residents have the opportunity to confidentially provide feedback and raise concerns without fear of retaliation; work with the 'pedsbesafe' committee to protect resident interests and ensure a safe learning environmentCo-lead the nomination and selection of the Chief Residents with the Vice Chair for EducationProvide mentorship, supervision and support for the Pediatric Chief ResidentsImplement and oversee any pediatric residents that require remediation or corrective action processesWork with the program coordinator and Vice Chair for Education on the budget for the Residency Training ProgramServe as team leader for the Associate Program Directors.
The successful candidate will have a level of educational accomplishment consistent with the appointment as assistant professor, associate professor or professor of pediatrics at VP&S and demonstrated accomplishment as a faculty member of a school of medicine (or equivalent);Must have a NYS Medical licenseA national/international reputation as an outstanding clinician/educator and leader in undergraduate or graduate medical education;Board certification in Pediatrics and/or a Pediatric subspecialty with a clinical training in pediatrics;Minimum of 3 years of experience in educational program;Demonstrated effectiveness in education program development, professional education and medical education in an academic environment;Demonstrated success in creating, executing and monitoring strategic plans to achieve established goals for a group of physicians educators;Demonstrated success in leading medical education with the ability to effectively identify the implications of trainee outcomes;A proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage high-priority projects and delegate appropriately;Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities and/or barriers and apply effective management principles to achieve success;Consistently strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with professionals in other disciplines;The ability to create a high-energy results-oriented work environment that encourages colleagues and staff to value each other's contributions; andThe ability to share and celebrate success with colleagues and staff.Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran
