  Within OMA&D is the College Access unit that implements programs focused on expanding access for underserved communities by partnering with K-12 school districts, two-year colleges, and community coalitions. The Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, Rural Initiatives in STEM Education and Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP RISE UP) is the largest college access program serving middle and high school students.

  The GEAR UP RISE UP program has an outstanding opportunity for a STEM Curriculum and Program Manager (job profile Continuing Education Coordinator).

  The University of Washington GEAR UP RISE UP serves 8,000 students throughout Washington State. The goal of GEAR UP RISE UP is to increase student college-going rates and preparedness by enhancing educational environments and creating sustainable programs at the middle school and high school grade levels. The focus is on interventions/activities that intentionally provide students with opportunities which is designed to help low-income and first-generation students succeed in middle school and high school, enroll in college, and obtain a degree in a STEM field.   Under the supervision of the Director for the GEAR UP RISE UP, The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Curriculum and Program Manager (Continuing Education Coordinator) provides critical leadership, development, implementation, and coordination of STEM curriculum and programming for GEAR UP RISE UP cohort of students that starts at the 6th grade and continues to serve students through high school graduation. The goal is to support students to enroll in college and obtain a degree in a STEM field.

  The STEM Curriculum and Program Manager develops strategy and cultivates STEM partnerships regionally and nationally to increase experiential opportunities for GEAR UP students. This includes identifying partnerships within higher education, community-based STEM organizations, and STEM employers. This includes the development of STEM programming during the school day, afterschool, during winter break, spring break, and summers. Summer programming will include multiple STEM educational opportunities for students including field trips, overnight experiences, weeklong on campus experiences, and camps with partners.

  This position is a federal grant-funded position. This position is located at the GEAR UP RISE UP office in Toppenish, WA and requires travel in Yakima, Grant, Kittitas, and Skagit Valley counties, as well as occasional statewide and national travel. In addition, this program offers residential programming in the summer and overnight college visits throughout the year. GEAR UP RISE UP is open to the possibility for this individual to work from the Seattle office if the right candidate is identified.

  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  20% Assess program progress against grant-approved goals. Prepare quarterly reports on student progress. Communicate with key district leads, site coordinators, counselors, and other stakeholders to include STEM enrichment opportunities and overcome obstacles to STEM. Liaise with GEAR UP program evaluator to ensure compliance. Interprets data and suggests mid-course program improvements to stay aligned with grant goals.

  20% Expand STEM partnerships with higher education partners, UW Academic units with STEM Majors, community based STEM partners, and regional and national STEM employers to develop student programming, provide guest speakers, develop curriculum, expand research internships and other STEM enrichment experiences for middle and high school students.

  10% Implement STEM programming for students including afterschool programs, virtual and in person experiences, guest speakers, lab and industry visits, and multi-day programming during winter break, spring break, and summer.

  10% Research, create, and maintain a comprehensive online database of STEM opportunities for staff and students, such as internships, workshops, research, science and college fairs and presentations, scholarships, and support services for college and transfer students. Provide newsletter for teachers/school partners. Provide newsletter of STEM opportunities for students. Create STEM based content for program website, social media, and other communications platforms.

  10% Provide the Director with STEM subject matter expertise, and provides strategic guidance and support in the development, management, and coordination of the GEAR UP Program. In collaboration with the Director, develop and implement program objectives, procedures, practices, and policies.

  10% Provide coaching, training, and STEM support for school-based GEAR UP staff to expand the number of STEM field trips, STEM nights, dual credit counseling, and other STEM based events and workshops that take outside of the classroom.

  10% Supervise Interns who support STEM programming and goals. Hire, train, and supervise temporary and seasonal College Mentors who staff summer programs.

  5% Liaise with teachers, counselors, and support staff at target schools to expand STEM opportunities and represent the GEAR UP program in meetings and other functions both on and off campus.

  5% - Other duties as assigned.

  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree and 3 years experience teaching at the secondary or college level, with preference to those who have taught Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math

  Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS• Experience working with middle and high school students from underrepresented minority, low income or first-generation backgrounds and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.• Experience developing and implementing STEM curriculum and/or youth development programming.• Must be conversant with research and practice on STEM enrichment programs.• Experience organizing and planning program activities and services, managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and meeting tight program deadlines.• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking and articulating ideas clearly in person and in writing.• Demonstrated information and technical literacy and experience working with computer systems, databases, and creating and maintaining online content and collecting data online required.• Effective program management skills including setting goals and communicating them to stakeholders, ongoing communication with stakeholders, relationship management, meeting reporting requirements, managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and meeting tight program deadlines.• The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  Desired:

  • Master’s degree in education, science, technology, or engineering.• Experience managing interns, volunteers, tutors, or young professionals.• Bilingual and/or bicultural.• Knowledge of RISE UP partners schools districts and regional initiatives, and communities• Experience working on federal education grants including GEAR UP, TRIO, CAMP, or other-like programs that serve underserved students.• Experience working with middle and high school students from historically excluded minority, low income or first-generation backgrounds and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.• Experience providing advising or counseling to students in preparation for college entrance and knowledge of post-secondary institutions, admissions, financial aid and career development• Working knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint Information System and other cloud-based administration.• Proficient in excel, power point, teams, and ZOOM, as well as social media platforms.
