About Health Office Coordinator- Hamden, NY

  This position will serve as the Health Office Coordinator of 4-H Camp Shankitunk. Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6+) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County. The Health Office Coordinator is responsible for implementing all medical requirements described in the camp safety plan submitted to the Department of Health and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.

  Responsibilities include reviewing, evaluating, protecting, and maintaining campers' health records; securing and administering medicines and treatment to campers according to physicians' orders; recording all treatment according to established procedures and reporting required incidents to the local health department within 24 hours. The Health Office Coordinator determines when a camper must receive attention from a physician or other medical professional and arranges transportation as needed. The Health Office Coordinator oversees and coordinates the Health Center and provides training to camp personnel as needed, including, but not limited to, first aid, epi-pen assistance, and inhaler assistance. The Health Office Coordinator oversees campers' initial health screening and medication check-in with support from Health Assistants. The Health Office Coordinator is responsible for maintaining supply inventory in the Health Center and submitting order requests as needed.

  Required Qualifications:

  LPN, licensed to practice in New York State.

  Certifications in CPR/AED and epi-pen as approved by local Department of Health.

  Able to lift 20 pounds.

  Ability and desire to live on site Sunday through Friday (accommodations and meals provided).

  Preferred Qualifications:

  RN, licensed to practice in New York State desirable.

  Experience or background in school, visiting, or public health nursing is desirable.

  Experience in residential youth camping desirable.

  Familiarity or experience with the 4-H Mission of Positive Youth Development desirable.

  Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  Administrative Direction – 5%

  Set up a system for dispensing medications with instructions.

  Support community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy.

  Administrative Management – 45%

  Review camper health forms.

  Ensure campers' health records and medicines are kept secure and confidential.

  Oversee initial health screening of overnight campers and daily health surveillance of camp occupants.

  Conduct initial health screening for each camp participant will include, but not be limited to, a review of the individual's medical information, noting health restrictions or concerns, and inspecting at check-in for signs of illness or injury.

  Follow the camp's standing orders.

  Determine when a camper must receive attention from a physician or other medical professional.

  Act as the primary contact with parents or guardians when there are health concerns or an emergency.

  Safeguard all medications per product directions; controlled substances must be double-locked.

  Supervise health and sanitation at camp and perform daily inspections of camper sleeping spaces.

  Ensure that Health Center is cleaned and sanitized daily.

  Monitor medical log entries daily for common ailments and increased illness cases with similar symptoms (e.g., headache, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, eye infection, sore throat). If appropriate, communicate with the Camp Director and the local health department for the appropriate intervention strategies to be implemented at the camp to prevent illness spread and reoccurrence.

  Administrative Coordination/Operation – 45%

  Keep records of all camper treatments performed and medicines administered.

  Share information about allergies, special diets, activity restrictions, or other conditions/special needs with the appropriate staff in charge of the activity (e.g., camper's counselor, aquatic director, food service coordinator, etc.).

  Store all medications per product directions; controlled substances must be double-locked.

  Organize all camper medication.

  Implement the medical requirements and procedures described in the camp safety plan.

  Administer medicines and treatment to campers according to physicians' orders.

  Handle health emergencies and injuries, including emergency preparedness and provisions for professional health care.

  Lead health training for camp, including, but not limited to, first aid, epi-pen assist, and inhaler assist.

  Report required incidents to the local health department within 24 hours.

  Coordinate transportation for patients requiring off-campus medical attention.

  Prepare and re-stock as-needed first aid kits and equipment for use by program staff.

  Maintain oversight for the CAMP AED, located in the health center.

  Maintain campers' health records and medicines.

  Maintain supply inventory and submitted order requests.

  Maintain the camp's daily medical log.

  Professional Improvement – 5%

  In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

  Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

  Position Details

  This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 9th. The salary will range from $800 -$5,600. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

  The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday with sleeping quarters provided in the infirmary & meals provided. Must be a NY State LPN or RN. Up to date CPR (within the last year) and First Aid (within the last two years) is required!
