  Primary Purpose

  The Ceramics Lab Assistant is responsible to assist Ceramic Shop Supervisor in facilitating student work through the ceramic process.

  Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities

  Manage and execute basic ceramic shop operations including loading and firing electric and gas kilns, mixing shop glazes and colored slips, recycle scrap clay, maintain kiln shelves and furniture and monitor open lab times.

  Coordinate and train Federal Work Study students in loading/unloading electric kilns, glaze and slip mixing and maintenance, clay recycling, shop clean up and monitoring open lab times.

  Do thorough cleanup of ceramic shop and student lockers at end of each term in preparation for the following term.

  Other duties as assigned; example; assist with Student Ceramic Sale, set up ceramic displays in other areas of campus.

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  Knowledge of ceramics processes.

  Ability to have a flexible schedule to accommodate unpredictable needs of the shop and student output. Often requires weekends and evening shifts, particularly towards the end of the term.

  Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.

  Knowledge of how to effectively and sensitively work with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

  Ability to demonstrate essential duties outlined above.

  Ergonomic Requirements

  Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.

  Work is physical. Requires ability to lift 50 pounds and possibly the use of power hand tools. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

  Minimum Requirements

  High School diploma or GED .

  Computer literacy: experience with email, Internet, word processing, and spreadsheets (preferably experience with MS Office Suite products).

  Knowledge of standard office equipment and phones.
