About the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF):
The Department of Local Government Finance is responsible for ensuring property tax assessment and local government budgeting are carried out in accordance with Indiana law. The Department is charged with publishing property tax assessment rules and annually reviewing and approving the tax rates and levies of every political subdivision in the state, including all counties, cities, towns, townships, school corporations, libraries, and other entities with tax levy authority.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
A Day in the Life:
During the internship, the intern will:
Provide training to local government officials on budget procedures, debt reporting and submission procedures, additional appropriation meeting and reporting standards, steps for the establishment of cumulative funds, calculation and advertisement of excessive levy appeals and other matters concerning local government finance.
Compile financial and historical data generated both by the Department and by local government for the preparation of budget reviews including projected non property tax revenues, annual financial reports, and ledger reports.
Coordinate with local officials to ensure timely reporting of various information and reports related to debt, TIF districts configuration, certified net assessed values, and budgets documentation.
Assist Budget Division Director in the development of budget related manuals and training programs for local officials
Foster effective relationships with the local officials within the assigned territory including scheduling and conducting periodic in person and virtual meetings
Provide daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports to the Budget Division Director during the budget preseason, workshop season, and budget certification season.
What You'll Need for Success:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
Academic work in related field
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
Ability to conduct well-informed research
Ability to solve complex, critical problems
Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
