The Hormel Institute's top focus is to investigate the causes of cancer and other chronic diseases and to identify potential novel targets for prevention and treatment. Research topics of particular interest include Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, and other Quantitative Biology fields. Our mission is to conduct research and provide education in the biological sciences with applications in medicine and agriculture. In pursuit of this mission, and as intended by its founders, The Hormel Institute generates fundamental knowledge and disseminates it to the scientific community worldwide. It also serves as a center of technical and educational expertise for the benefit of the Austin community, the surrounding region, and the State of Minnesota. Focus of Job Responsibilities 80% - Research Be a productive scientist with independent, innovative ideas, willing and able to work collaboratively across disciplines. Conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, and/or quantitative biology. Build and/or maintain a strong, extramurally funded collaborative research program to advance our understanding of cell and/or organism function. Engage in creative research and imaginative scientific discovery. Continue professional growth within the scientific community, keep current with the field, and broaden knowledge and expertise. 10% - Service Provide service through participation in governance, committees, boards at the Institute, University, scientific community, and/or local community. Participation in individual or group DEI development and/or inclusive culture seminars, workshops, and activities. Contribute to outreach activities in the local community 10% - Mentoring, Teaching, and Supervision Create a collaborative, innovative, and welcoming lab environment focusing on mentoring, training, and education. Ensure onboarding, training, and expectations are set for all employees in your lab, ensuring compliance with the Institute's mission and vision. Annually assess lab employees' work performance and identify improvement areas through mentorship. The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and The Hormel Institute endorses a "work with flexibility" approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment where everyone is inspired to do their best. Work location options include working fully remote, partially remote, or entirely in the office and are based on the work of the position. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. This position has been designated as OVPR Work Profile One. OVPR Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time. Qualifications Required Qualifications PhD, MD, DVM., and/or other equivalent degrees Strong record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals Evidence of high quality training and mentorship activities Demonstrable commitment to quity, diversity and inclusion Proven ability to acquire extramural funding Preferred Qualifications Postdoctoral experience in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, quantitative biology, or related field. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive research collaborations. Physical & Environmental Requirements Must be able to lift 25 pounds. About the Department The Hormel Institute scientists have private access to numerous cutting-edge technologies in core facilities that support animal, cell, and molecular biology as well as biochemistry and biophysics experi mentation beyond the individual labs. Some examples include FACS Cell Sorting, Confocal Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Protein Crystallography Robotics, Rigaku 007 microfocus X-ray diffraction system, and nano-HPLC-AB SCIEX triple TOF 5600 mass spectrometry. Access also is provided to IVIS live animal imaging, Leica tissue Processor, Embedder and Microtome, tissue microdissection, real-time PCR instru mentation, and Odyssey Infrared Imaging System, Spectrophotometers, Fluorometers (Horiba SPEX FluoroLog 3), Surface Plasmon Resonance (Biacore T200 system) and Gel/Western Blot Imagers. To augment the laboratory core facilities, The Hormel Institute offers excellent computation support for users via the Research Computing and IT group (RCIT). The Institute has a centralized data center with dedicated cooling and UPS power backup. The Institute provides high-performance storage that meets the most stringent needs of researchers for high-performance computing and tape archival storage for long-term data retention. The Institute offers state-of-the- art CPU and GPU resources for batch processing of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics workloads. In addition to hardware, RCIT staff provide expertise in Linux, open-source software, parallel computing, and interactive computing. All faculty are supported through institutional services for grant submission, scientific editing, financial and laboratory management.
