The Thermal Processing Engineer will serve as a technicalresource for both the DOE Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office(IEDO) and the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office(AMMTO). The objective of the Thermal Processing Engineer is to supportthe IEDO and AMMTO clients in assessing the energy, economic, anddecarbonization potential for emerging industrial technologies at scale in acommercial marketplace. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Acting as the technical subject matter expert for thermal processing,synthesize and clearly communicate results of research related to thermalprocessing applications in industrial sectors to colleagues and clientsthrough formal and informal presentations and written technical communications(reports, white papers, fact sheets, briefings, journal articles, etc.).Leads small research projects and provides project management support forfederal clientsWorks independently or as a member of a team; leads small teams.Contributes to strategic plan of federal government technical programs(proposed or in progress) with respect to goals and objectives,implementation plans, and budget allocations.Takes technical information and develops clear planning and summary documentsDevelops and implements performance metrics for client projects and programs.Work closely with program managers and co-workers in a fast-pacedcollaborative team environment (diligent and responsive contributor).Advise on industry-relevant demonstration opportunities for decarbonizationvia thermal processing technologies and processes across related fields andsectors.Collects R&D project and program information; summarizes results in draftreports.Analyzes global technology developments, trends, and statistics(energy, carbon, and economics)Liaison between scientists at universities/laboratories and governmentdecision-makers to assist in distilling key technical results and potentialimpacts from R&D.Supports in person and virtual meetings with clients and stakeholders,including but not limited to preparing meeting materials, schedulingmeetings, assisting the meeting facilitator, and summarizing proceedings.Assists clients in the preparation of technical reports required by the agencyhierarchy, by Congress, or by the Administration.Assists clients in the preparation of technical materials designed to educateor inform the public.Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor's degree in engineering required (Thermal Processing, orsimilar engineering degree). 5 years' experience with a bachelor'sdegree or 3 years' experience with a Master's degree required.Experience in thermal processing, including industrial operation of thermalprocessing units (e.g., heat exchangers, combustion equipment),research of operations or new technologies, equipment development andengineering for thermal processing units, and analysis of unit oper tionsfor improving thermal efficiency.Interest in manufacturing, decarbonization, and/or clean energy technologiesExcellent communication skills, including strong technical writing skillsand an ability to tailor written and verbal communications for technical andnon-technical audiences.A strong interest in pursuing work in the area of manufacturing, industrialsector decarbonization, and the clean energy transition.Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced analytical and Excel skills.Demonstrated ability to excel when working on self-managed tasks and as amember of a team.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.In compliance with Executive Order 14042, any successful applicant for thisposition must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain an accommodationfrom the vaccination requirement based on disability or sincerely heldreligious belief, on or before the start datePEREFRRED REQUIREMENTS:Candidates with experience in industrial settings strongly encouraged toapply.Experience with electrification of process heating.Knowledge of energy efficiency or energy management systems in industrial orcommercial facilities.Experience with complex enterprise architectures and securing complexenterprise architectures is preferredMasters or PhD degrees in science and engineering degrees are a plus, butnot required.Candidates with years of experience greater than the minimum are alsoencouraged to apply.Experience in government consulting, supporting government organizations,public-private partnerships, or stakeholder engagement.
