Job Description Summary
The temporary pathology technician (prosector) assists veterinary pathologists in autopsy (systematic dissection of animals) for diagnostic, teaching, and research purposes, as well as the general operation of the pathology services. In addition to assisting in autopsy dissection, routine responsibilities include tissue/specimen collection and preparation, coordination of samples collected for teaching and research, processing tissues for further testing, data entry/data retrieval (basic computer skills required), and cleaning/upkeep of the postmortem room facilities and equipment. This position requires a dependable, detail-oriented individual who is not squeamish, can perform physical postroom tasks, and has excellent communication skills. Interaction with outside submitters (owners and veterinarians), New Bolton Center (NBC) veterinary clinicians and students, and other NBC services is common.
Job Description
Position is located in Kennett Square, PA (Chester County) where there is no public transportation. You must have your own transportation.
Job responsibilities include:
Cadaver dissection
Specimen handling and coordination – including diagnostic, teaching and research samples
Computer data entry
Equipment and facility cleaning & maintenance of operations
Client communications
Other duties as assigned
Position is contingent upon funding .
Qualifications
High School Diploma required. Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Husbandry or related field is preferred, and applicants having familiarity with domestic and/or wild animals will be preferred. Prophylactic vaccination for Rabies Virus is also required (cost compensated by the laboratory). Applicants must be willing and able to drive a university-owned vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license, to safely operate hand and power-tools (eg bow saw, commercial-grade band saw, mechanical hoist), and be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Work schedule - 9:00a - 5:00p with some flexibility.
