Description
The San Mateo Medical Center is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Sterile Processing Supervisor - Exempt . The current vacancy is a regular, full-time vacancy.
Under the direction of the Operating Room Manager, the Sterile Processing Supply Supervisor will supervise staff and activities involved in the overall operation of the sterile processing department.
The i deal candidate will possess the following:
5 years of experience in a Sterile Processing department of a large acute care hospital or acute care nursing setting.
At least one year of experience in leading and supervising staff.
Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of Infection control principles.
Possession of a valid Central Service (Sterile Processing) Technician certificate issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or acquisition.
Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assign duties and supervise the work of staff.
Assist Operating Room Manager with budget recommendations; monitor and control expenditures to ensure the accomplishment of objectives within an approved budget.
Plan, organize and direct the operation of distribution and receiving, material control and inventory record keeping, and hospital sterile supply services.
Establish methods and standards for preparing and handling sterile items, using aseptic techniques, and train staff in these methods.
Oversee use of sterilizing equipment; decontamination; setting up of treatment trays; preparation, processing and packaging of instruments.
Analyze stock activity records and recommend changes in service levels and catalog descriptions, and disposal of obsolete and slow-moving items in the Sterile Core.
Supervise the taking of periodic physical inventories, assist in investigating and reconciling discrepancies, and confer with management concerning requests received for items not stocked and recommend substitutes and/or take appropriate action to supply requirements in the Sterile Core.
Develop and maintain workload statistics and recommend appropriate work standards in the Sterile Core.
Organize and maintain manual and computerized receiving and inventory control records of supplies and equipment.
Arrange for regular check up of electrical equipment and for repair of instruments.
Prepare reports and maintain records of department activities.
Assist in selection of staff.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Four years of experience in the central supply department of a large acute care hospital or in acute care nursing.Licensure/Certification: Possession of a Central Service Technician certificate issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or acquisition within one year of appointment.
Knowledge of:
Supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, scheduling, review and evaluation and employee training and corrective action.
Methods, practices and equipment used in the receipt, storage, handling, issuing and preservation of Instruments and equipment.
Processing, decontamination and sterilization techniques and infection control practices.
Applicable laws, safety regulations and precautions related community health care facilities.
Inventory control techniques and procedures.
Nursing principles, methods and procedures.
Medical terminology.
Clinical systems, supplies and equipment and their uses.
Skill/Ability to:
Plan, assign, supervise, review and evaluate the work of others.
Train others in work procedures; organize and prioritize work and meet operational department supply needs and deadlines.
Use sterilizing and decontamination equipment; set up treatment trays, process and package instruments.
Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Maintain inventory and billing records.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other hospital and clinic departments.

Departmental Promotional Only. Only current County of San Mateo employees in the San Mateo County Health with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date may apply.
The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
