  Position Summary:

  Direct oversight and responsibility for the success of the law enforcement program. Exercise primary responsibility for the law enforcement program using the POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) model, standards, and curriculum. The program collaborates to meet the needs of law enforcement agencies in the service region and serve their employment needs.

  The coordinator will identify, supervise, and coordinate with the teachers to deliver POST-certified instruction. The Coordinator will also coordinate activities associated with the recruitment and advising of students, as well as the continuous development, management, and improvement of the program.

  Maintain composure in a high-stress environment that includes training students in the use of live firearms, fire evacuations and water rescues and other scenarios.

  Essential Functions:

  • Recruit and interview student candidates to determine qualifications are met to enter the program (e.g., background check, polygraph, and interview) and continue to advise students throughout the program.

  • Takes primary responsibility for retaining students, following established guidelines for contacting students.

  • Records student attendance and tracks student outcomes.

  • Manage student registration and testing.

  • Conduct and ensure students certify in CPR, first aid, and emergency procedures pertinent to law enforcement.

  • Manage classroom coordination, field, and laboratory training to include securing training sites, providing equipment and training aides while maintaining a high level of student safety and security.

  • Recruit, develop, evaluate and schedule POST-certified instructors. Review teacher student evaluations and conduct performance evaluations and report results as needed.

  • Instruct students to POST standards as needed in a variety of topics including but not limited to report writing, hands-on training in traffic stops, detention, and building entry.

  • Develop program schedules, lesson plans, exams, and other measurements needed to determine student level of performance and understanding.

  • Ensure the safety of students during training in the use of weapons, apprehension, and emergency vehicle operation.

  • Provide POST-approved and aligned instruction to students in the program in area(s) of expertise.

  • Coordinate the organizing and conducting of regular meetings of the law enforcement advisory committee.

  • Accompany program lead in negotiating training agreements and meetings with executives of local law enforcement agencies.

  • Maintain POST-certified instructor status and engage in professional development to ensure expertise in a specialty and to teach additional subjects.

  • Maintain POST program certification including articulating with other agencies, high schools, and other post-secondary programs.

  • Attend and participate in all Social Science department meetings and required faculty/professional training.

  • Represent the law enforcement program at public events within the community with professionalism.

  • Effectively address student issues or complaints.

  • Cooperate professionally with all other departments, faculty, staff, and students of the College to provide an effective educational program.

  • Assume responsibility for the safety of all equipment assigned to students in the program including supervision of the law enforcement vehicle fleet.

  • Conveys by words and actions the values expected by CWI.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in law enforcement or related criminal justice field.

  • Established POST-certified instructor or the ability to earn POST teaching certification required.

  • Proven ability to conduct law enforcement training and evidence of earned advanced POST certificates preferred (Intermediate, Advanced, Master, and/or Executive).

  • Experience in program coordination and teaching experience in a POST-approved program.
