Job Summary
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas anddata behind current and future systems supplying innovative research anddevelopment; technical evaluations during the acquisition process;conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; andoperational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical andaerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicleengineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics;electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics;propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms;structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
The Space Structures Section is part of the Structures Department within theStructural Mechanics Subdivision of VSD.The section has insight into theadditively manufactured, metallic, and composite structures beingdeveloped across the industry for the next generation of spacecraft vehiclesand payloads and develops technical assessments to help inform governmentcustomer decisions. Our team is seeking a Spacecraft Structural Engineer witha strong foundation in solid mechanics coursework to include both handcalculations and finite element analysis techniques, a passion for the spaceindustry, and a desire to apply their expertise and creativity to help solvea variety of technical challenges.
Work Model
This is a full-time position, nominally based in El Segundo, CA,offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite work and remoteflexibility as the business needs allow. Additional locations to consider areChantilly, VA, Colorado Springs, CO or Albuquerque, NM.
What You'll Be Doing
Resolve design and test issues/anomalies/challenges via detailedstructural analyses of spacecraft and payloads including the core busstructure, bolted or bonded joint concepts, appendages, opticalsystems, booms, solar arrays, and deployables.
Offer technical consultation to management, customers, contractors, andgovernment organizations in formulating and assessing test plans,procedures, objectives, and success criteria.
Develop and assess design and analysis criteria, requirements, andspecifications for space structures.
Contribute to the development and execution of test programs fordevelopment, qualification, and acceptance of space structures.
Improve agility of the mission assurance process in assessing the structuralintegrity and survivability of space structures.
Maintain state-of-the-art skills in activities related to design,evaluation, and testing of space structures. Skills include expertise instructural mechanics analysis techniques, failure criteria, compositedesign criteria, fracture and fatigue, damage tolerance, conceptideation and development, and advanced finite element analysis methods.
Communicate with both inter-organizational personnel, program offices, andcustomers when necessary to scope, plan, and resolve technical issues.
-Coordinate with technical experts at contractor facilities to address andresolve concerns.
Work within interdisciplinary teams to address cross-disciplinary iss es.
Keep management and customers informed of emerging risks.
