The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate I to work in Miami, FL.

The principal objective of the position will be to support field and lab-based research activities conducted in collaboration with the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Coral Research and Assessment Lab (CoRAL) Unit.

Responsibilities include:

support field work activities including mobilization of equipment, trailering and driving research vessels, providing topside support, and SCUBA diving to conduct scientific research.

assist with maintenance of flow through and recirculating seawater systems used to propagate corals, assist or lead the establishment, maintenance, data collection, and breakdown of lab-based experiments.

be responsible for processing photographs using computer software, entering data in computer databases, and compiling data for reports to support the Southeast Fisheries Science Center Coral Research and Assessment Lab (CoRAL) Unit.Requirements.

Specific Duties:

1) The employee will assist in maintaining existing seawater systems including general aquarium maintenance, coral husbandry, and water quality monitoring.

2) The employee will prepare and maintain field equipment and supplies, including cameras, sampling tools, and datasheets in preparation for field surveys.

3) The employee will assist with experimental setup and data collection via SCUBA and/or serve as a topside boat tender.

4) The employee will assist in the setup, breakdown, maintenance, and collection of data during field surveys or experiments conducted in aquariums. Data collection will include computer image analysis and other computer-based skills.

5) The employee will be available to participate in lab and field work and outside of normal working hours when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required education is a B.S. degree. The incumbent must have some experience conducting field surveys via SCUBA and/or coral husbandry and must have the ability to work autonomously with strict attention to detail and have experience with PC software programs. Must have a valid US driver’s license, ability to lift heavy objects, pass a background check required to access federal facilities, and ability to work occasional extended hours. Current AAUS certification required. Preference given to candidates with experience conducting scientific dives (i.e., 100 dives), experience with coral husbandry, particularly coral recruits, and maintenance of seawater systems.
