Kelly Science & Clinical is currently recruiting candidates for a Safety Specialist position at a Biotechnology company in Houston TX. The overall responsibility of the position is to ensure the safety of the company’s employees by leading efforts in developing and practicing a culture of safety within the laboratory including employee safety training, regulated waste disposal, laboratory safety, and biosafety programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement safety policies and procedures focused on fostering safety culture throughout the lab
Conduct laboratory safety inspections to assess existing and potential health hazards and determine compliance with company policies and applicable regulations
Act as first point of contact for employees’ safety-related questions and concerns
Lead all Incident Investigations and near misses In the laboratory
Organizes and conducts routine safety meetings with the staff
Perform regular walkthroughs in the lab space identifying and correcting safety issues
Routinely inspects fire extinguishers and eye wash stations in the lab and office area
Develops and conducts training sessions with new employees and on special topics as directed by management
Maintain OSHA laboratory standards, hazard communication program, and conduct chemical inventory
Provide regulatory oversight of hazardous waste generators by conducting inspections to ensure regulatory compliance in storage, treatment, handling, minimization, transportation, disposal, and record keeping
Perform routine hazardous waste management activities such as waste inventories, vendor scheduling, and manifest tracking and filing
Act as the company liaison to federal, state, and local regulatory agencies related to environmental and occupational safety issues
Coordinate with Lab Manager regarding risk assessment of Installation of new equipment, generation of new waste and safety Issues as they arise
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology, microbiology or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
2+ years of experience in lab environment, preferably in industry
Experience performing chemical and/or biological laboratory inspections
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work cooperatively and cross-functionally
Working knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to recombinant DNA, biological agents, and biomedical research
Comfortable operating independently in a fast-changing environment
This is a temporary assignment with the possibility of being hired by the company based on business needs and individual performance. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Compensation is commensurate upon level of education and applicable experience.
