The Audit & Controls intern will be working with both Internal Audit and Controls teams on key projects during the summer months. This includes testing of company controls, performing test work on finance & operational audits, as well as assisting with risk assessment projects with the potential for ad hoc projects as needed. Both of the below departments report up to the VP, Internal Audit.
Internal Audit – This department owns ensuring the various Otis entities comply with a multitude of global and local policies including but not limited to: Finance & Operational (F&O), Digital Technologies (DT), Data Privacy, Ethics & Compliance etc. The department team is made up of the F&O group (1 team member) and the DT group (2 team members), along with a service partnership with E&Y globally.
Controls – This department provides prescriptive guidance to the organization around Sarbanes Oxley requirements, assists in testing controls, manages compliance tickets, as well as maintains ownership of the company wide control matrix among other responsibilities. The department team is made up of 2 team members, along with a partnership with our shared service team in India (OGSC).
On a typical day you will:
Company Level Controls Test work
Timeline: Early internship (weeks 1-6)
Deliverable: Documentation of testing of various Company Level Controls (CLC) within the ARMS Compliance tool
Responsibilities: Request support, test support received, and communicate with owners of various Company Level Controls to complete control test work
Audit Test work (F&O Audit)
Timeline: Mid/late internship (weeks 4-9)
Deliverable: Test sheets for various audit tests (varies based on audit/scope)
Responsibilities: Review & test support received for respective audit test. Document exceptions to test procedures, communicate any findings to internal audit manager to further determine potential impacts and next steps. Communicate with certain stakeholders on missing support or outstanding questions.
Business Control Process (BCP) definitions update
Timeline: Mid/late internship (weeks 6-end)
Deliverable: Updated BCP Definitions file
Responsibilities: Update the Business Control Process definitions file for any new or updated Otis specific definitions.
Ad hoc projects – timeline/deliverable/responsibilities flexible based on departmental needs
Example in 2023 included a risk assessment template update, which updated the 2024 risk assessment template for risk summary sheets, smarter use of formulas, and teams-channel functionality.
What You Will Need to be Successful :
Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in finance or accounting
General communication
Direct manager – weekly 1:1s regardless of project scope to discuss any feedback/needs
Performance connections
Specific project communication
Daily/ad hoc discussions to ensure time to ask any questions with respective project owner
Project trackers via test sheets & ARMS control test submissions to demonstrate progress and open questions/issues

What they will learn:
How the Otis business broadly operates and the important role of controls & compliance around financial and operational processes.
How internal audits then specifically measure the performance & design of these control processes through risk-based approach and test work.
What company level controls entail, and how to test the operation of these
Computer based skills, communication skills, exposure to Otis management to build on business acumen.
How they will learn:
Broad training around the Otis business will come through virtually hosted trainings by the finance training committee and finance related calls, including earnings calls and finance department global finance updates.
Specific on the job training before each project to ensure the intern up for success and understands the objectives.
Checks in during and recaps after each project to reinforce lessons and key takeaways including how the project fits into Otis as a whole.
How will they apply things such as technical skills, business acumen, soft skills:
Technical skills: Each project will introduce and reinforce computer application skills for the intern, specifically with Microsoft excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Business acumen: The intern will continue to build on their business acumen throughout the internship. This will start with initial learning of the Otis business early in the internship, will be reinforced with trainings, and be directly applicable to understanding and performing the projects listed above.
Soft Skills: Most of the projects will require collaboration and effective communication with colleagues, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills when encountering any issues with what they are working on.
