The Department of Microbiology faculty researches a vast array ofbacteria and viruses. We are a community of faculty, postdoctoralscholars, students, and staff committed to research and education in thefield of microbiology. Our faculty conduct interdisciplinary researchthat advances the study of microbes and microbial diseases. Basicresearch in Microbiology underwrites out effort for eradication ofimportant pathogens, prevention of human diseases, development of genetherapies and the evolution of new strategies for personalized medicine.We are also committed to training the next generation of scientists.
Job Summary
The Executive Administrator serves as the department\'s Chief FinancialOfficer and Chief Operating Officer responsible for leading a complexacademic research environment. In this role, the EA is responsible forbalancing departmental research, educational, and institutionalpriorities and will be a visible, engaged, and communicative leaderrepresenting the University of Chicago and the Biological SciencesDivision. The EA reports directly to the Department Chair with amatrixed relationship to the Vice Dean of Finance and Administration.
As the EA for the department, you will plan and direct broad and complexfinancial and management functions in support of departmental anddivisional goals. You are responsible for the strategic business andleadership of the department including the research operations, managingfinances, personnel, and resources to ensure that goals are met in atimely and effective manner. You will handle day to day administrationand operations of the departments educational and research programs, incollaboration with the Chair, Faculty, and Staff. You will maintain anenvironment conducive to peak performance in all areas of operation byworking closely with Department and Divisional leadership, key staff,and other administrators to ensure collaboration and alignment of goalswithin the Department. You will work with the Chair and the Division todevelop, plan, and implement strategic goals to advance innovativeresearch and education efforts in the department in alignment with theorganizational missions.
Responsibilities
Strategic Development and Execution
Develop, direct, and implement the strategic operating plans for thedepartment ensuring that all relevant information is available tosupport a collaborative planning process that involves a thoroughbusiness analysis, proposals, and plans for new research andeducational programs and the design/implementation of changes toexisting programs.Financial Responsibilities and Oversight
Responsible for the departmental budget, capital expenditures,grants, and oversight of all aspects of non-research expenditures,and manages discretionary funds, endowments/gifts, and accounts fornumerous active/emeritus faculty and graduate students.Research Administration Oversight
Works closely with faculty and divisional leadership to achieve theoverarching strategic objective of supporting and sustaininginnovative research, increasing the department\'s researchportfolio, focused on extramurally funded research.Oversees the extramural funding process (pre award to post award) tooptimize the potential for grant funding and to ensure all fundingawarded is used to the specification of the funding agency.Aligns resources and identifies, oversees, and develops fundingstrategies for successful attainment of external grant proposals andcontract applications from a range of sponsors in support ofresearch, education.Human Resources
Leads and manages all departmental staff establishing synergies andcontinuous improvement in the support of our faculty\'s research andeducational missions, and in the overall administrative program,delivery, and service.Cultivates a collaborative, inclusive environment that promotes andfosters teamwork, innovation, and problem solving supporting a safeand ethical environment.Space and Facilities Administration
