  Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  Experience with electronic and multimedia publishing strongly desired.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple production schedules and multiple vendors and keep projects on deadline. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; highly developed oral and written communications; close attention to detail; ability to work independently and to take initiative, e.g. in researching and overseeing the development of new products. Copy editing and proofreading experience, familiarity with Chicago style, strongly preferred. Familiarity with a range of production-related software.

  The Director sets production schedules for new books and other products, in collaboration with editorial and marketing staff, and ensures that all projects stay on deadline. Works collaboratively with editorial and marketing staff to conceive and execute layout, cover art and design of new products. The Director develops and manages the production budget, consulting the executive director as needed and provides cost estimates for signed titles, as well as cost analysis of all final products, including (but not limited to) printed books, electronic books, and audio books. The Director identifies and researches opportunities for publishing in new media, directly supervises Editorial and Digital Production Manager, and manages the production of a portion of the publication list each publication season. The person also evaluates, hires and manages vendors for copyediting, proofreading, typesetting, design, printing, and shipping of all books and journals. They negotiate rates, establish and manage schedules, prepare purchase orders, and approves bills. As Director of Production of the Harvard Educational Review, the person manages editorial production and oversees the Board editing process to ensure that publication stays on schedule. The person in this position copyedits, proofreads, and contributes to production of marketing materials as necessary.

  This job is crucial to the success and good functioning of HEPG. Our publications reach readers throughout the United States and world, and as such they contribute both to the world of education research, policy, and practice and to HGSE's reputation within that world.

  The Director of Production works closely with all HEPG staff members, and particularly with production, editorial, and marketing colleagues. This position also interacts extensively with freelancers (e.g., copyeditors and typesetters) and vendors (e.g., printers and shippers) throughout the United States. Also, the Director of Production works extensively with our authors, who are of course crucially important to HEPG.

  The Director of Production at Harvard Education Press (HEP) is responsible for managing and overseeing the timely production of all HEPG publications: Harvard Education Press books, e-books, audio books, and other products, HER Reprint books and the Harvard Educational Review.
