MnDOT District 6 may fill up to 10 year round and summer Student Worker Para Professional Senior/Student Worker Para Professional positions in locations listed below. Hours of work vary based on students availability and the needs of the department.
Job Descriptions of Vacancies:
Construction (Owatonna - up to 2 positions)
Enjoy working outside? Assist in inspection of contractor’s work and methods so that the construction work meets the requirements of the plans, specifications, and special provisions. Perform field testing of construction materials to ensure that tests are performed accurately, timely, thoroughly, and according to specification. Document and summarize all appropriate data necessary to pay contractors promptly and process final contract acceptance documents to ensure data integrity and compliance with government regulations.
Typical Hours (Monday - Friday, Overtime likely, including some Saturdays or contractor’s hours) 7:00AM - 3:30PM
Materials (Rochester)
Assist the Materials Lab in performing various materials property tests on materials used for road and bridge construction, assist the Auger Crew with performing field investigation of place pavements and soils and/or assist Material Engineers with collecting and compiling data from various historical sources.
Typical Hours (Monday - Friday) 7:00 AM -3:30 PM.
Traffic (Rochester)
This job is a mix of field and office work. Duties could include assisting with field studies, data gathering, traffic counting, asset management and reporting, field equipment inspections and tabulations, and database or spreadsheet creation. This hands-on position will also work with MnDOT technology and computer applications.
Flexible hours (Monday - Friday) Full and Parttime available.
Hydraulics (Rochester - up to 4 positions)
Enjoy working outside and seeing areas all around Southeast MN? Assist the Hydraulics Squad Leader in inspecting drainage features like pipes, ponds, and structures. Use GIS tools to update databases and ensure features are accurate. Recommend repairs to pipes in poor condition to avoid damage to our State Highways and unplanned detours.
Typical Hours (Monday - Thursday) 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
Surveys (Rochester)
Enjoy working outside? A [Student Worker\Seasonal Worker] in Surveys would work on a variety of sites to prepare for future construction projects and to assist in staking current construction projects. They would learn how a construction project is designed and the mapping efforts needed to produce a final plan. They would also see how a project is built and the role of a Survey crew on a site. Field Surveying also includes all efforts to define property boundaries. This task includes in-office researching and interpreting existing surveys followed by field measuring of physical evidence to assist Licensed Surveyors in boundary determinations.
This process would include working with existing surveys, construction plans, survey notes, coordinate systems, horizontal and vertical control points, bridge working points and more. They would be exposed to Survey grade GPS units, precision total stations and high-definition laser scanning. This would involve physical activity, pounding stakes, digging holes, and carrying survey tools. Typically, they would work with a single lead technical worker.
Typical Hours (Monday-Thursday) 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Design/Project Management (Rochester)
Perform basic computer aided drafting and designing (CADD) and project estimates. Support project managers by drafting documents in Word or Excel, developing public information exhibits, and other work related to the development and management of project scopes, schedules, budgets, and stakeholders.
Typical Hours (Monday - Friday). 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18 years old or older
Knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Knowledge of computer software used in testing and design work and ability to use windows based operating systems.
Ability to understand technical documents and follow instructions.
Candidates must be currently enrolled or enrolling within three months as a full-time student (six semester/9 quarter credits) in a post-secondary or graduate program with a GPA of at least 2.0.
Candidates with at least one year of post-secondary education in the program area in which they are employed will qualify for the student worker para professional senior classification.
Valid Class D Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying or related program.
Full-time student with a GPA of at least 3.0.
Physical Requirements
Some of the jobs are physical in nature and will require a pre-employment physical.
Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
