Summary This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL and is organizationally aligned under the Facilities Management service line within the Maintenance and Repairs Section. The work involves constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, concrete, composite building materials, and other materials as needed. Responsibilities This position involves constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, concrete, composite building materials, and other materials as needed. Duties Include: Setting up and operating a wide variety of wood working and carpentry trade associated machines and tools. Assembling items with a wide variety of joining techniques such as mitters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and using glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops; and Performing other related duties as assigned. Constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, doors frames and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, countertops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and moldings. Installing, repairing, and modifying doors and their associated hardware on wood, metal, and composite doors as required. This is to include adjusting hinges for doors to work properly, working on or replacing door handles, and working on door closures or openers. Repairs minor damage to wood furniture including installing gliders, casters, and bumpers. Installs, hangs, and sometimes makes racks, bins, rough shelving, bulletin boards, cabinets, and other items, making sure that they are properly attached to the wall. On occasion may help with light work on concrete floors, gutters, and steps. Carpenter is also required to clean ice, snow, and debris from roofs and gutters. Carpenter is required to perform periodic inspections on interior and exterior surfaces of various buildings. Carpenter is also required to assist with repairs on roof of various types. Install, replace, repair window shades, curtain hangers, drapery rods, and ceiling tiles. Install, replace, and repair limited amounts of flooring coverings such as regular, and inlaid linoleum floor tiles or various kinds and other flooring material as needed. Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications and determining the layout and work sequences of work to be completed. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM 4:00 PM. Education Additional Information Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.
