  Job Appointment: Full Time, Limited Duration. Persons appointed to limited term positions will be designated as limited duration employees whose appointment shall not exceed two (2) years except for the extension of grants or funding from outside sources.

  Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm. Alternate schedule may be available.

  Work Location: Hybrid. In-person work to be conducted at The Vanport Building located at 1810 SW 5th Avenue. Field work is also required at various locations within the City.   About the Position:

  The City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) is hiring for a Business Compost & Waste Reduction Outreach Coordinator to help Portland’s food businesses expand food scraps collection and meet compost requirements. This position will spend much of their time working directly with businesses, including multilingual and multicultural businesses across Portland. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable visiting businesses, engaging busy managers and employees in a friendly and respectful way, and providing clear and helpful education and assistance with composting and food waste reduction.

  As a Business Compost & Waste Reduction Outreach Coordinator, you will:

  Conduct outreach to businesses around commercial food scrap composting requirement, including partnering with community-based organizations to reach underserved businesses.

  Assist businesses in effective compost collection, food waste prevention practices, and food donation measures.

  Help businesses overcome barriers to setting up compost, including working with garbage companies, business’ property manager or parent company, and City or County staff.

  Collaborate with outreach and communications staff to develop new methods of reaching businesses, including increasing awareness of the compost requirement.

  Deliver resources to businesses, including compost containers and training materials.

  Track and record outreach and assistance through our database.

  Report on outreach effectiveness, using our database and other tools.

  Participate in regional work groups and meetings.

  The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  Experience researching, planning and implementing education and engagement programs, services or campaigns; preferably with a business audience.

  Ability to communicate clearly, logically, and persuasively.

  Experience working with community members from diverse social, cultural, or economic backgrounds, including those whose primary language is not English.

  Knowledge of environmental sustainability principles and practices, such as composting, recycling, waste prevention, or other aspects of sustainability.
