Position Summary: Supports department by preparing medications for patient dispensing, maintaining
appropriate records, and performing assigned duties to assure adherence to safety & quality, productivity & profitability (accurate financial accountability), and regulatory compliance. The Discharge Pharmacist in Charge supports the goals, objectives, and overall functions of the department and the system in order to facilitate positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient confidentiality. The Discharge Pharmacist in Charge will comply with the policies, laws, regulations, and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy as well as those of the system. The Discharge Pharmacist in Charge will maintain an appropriate level of competency in order to perform the job duties as required by the department, the hospital and any regulatory agencies.
LISTING OF PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for the operation of the outpatient pharmacy department and is accountable for improving prescription numbers, quality assurance management, pharmacy sales, profit, and image through the accurate filling of prescriptions and providing courteous and efficient service to customers, and developing and protecting department assets.
Fills medication orders with highly efficient and dose calculations.
Responsible for the training, scheduling and development of department personnel.
Responsible for assisting the Pharmacy Manager in projects set forth by Administration.
Responsible for ensuring the pharmacy department procedures and practices are in compliance with federal and state regulations and guidelines.
Adheres to federal and state laws and regulations and hospital policies concerning the receipt, storage, shipment, and dispensing of controlled drugs and all other drugs; maintains required records, documentation, and reports.
Reviews and complies with the Discharge Pharmacy code of conduct.
Adheres to guidelines to the Code of ethics.
Implement department organization structure through proper placement, transferring of personnel, scheduling of work, assignment of responsibility, delegation of authority or recommendations of the same.
Develops department employees through orientation, training, establishment of objectives, and communication of rules.
Maintains and improves performance of department, through the building of employee morale and motivation, rewards employees and addresses employee complaints where appropriate, and uses constructive discipline policies of the hospital; to discipline, or recommend to suspend, or discharge. Utilizes constructive discipline to ensure compliance with state and federal laws by pharmacy department personnel.
Utilizes “open door policy”.
Informs all appropriate personnel of department’s plans, programs, and operations that affect their areas, and encourages feedback from all employees, so as to increase productivity.
Coordinates and organizes pharmacy department daily schedule of activities.
Manages pharmacy staffing by planning for, and scheduling appropriate pharmacy hours in adherence with budgeting guidelines.
Recommends allocation of pharmacy hours and support personnel; attains payroll budget and controls use of overtime.
Manage and controls merchandise or med orders from proper internal and external sources.
Assures proper administration and implementation of third party pharmacy systems and procedures to lessen payment rejections. Resolve third party rejection problems promptly, and resubmits rejected claims for payment on a timely basis.
Supervises operation of pharmacy computer data to obtain patient and drug information, process prescriptions, and perform other necessary functions on the system in accordance with policies and regulations.
Supervises competitive pricing surveys and recommends changes in prices when needed.
Reaffirms with all pharmacy department personnel, on a regular basis, their obligations regarding the dispensing of prescriptions only in good faith.
Reports prescription errors immediately and documents appropriately.
Recommends and implements loss prevention controls and procedures to identify and minimize profit loss.
Returns slow moving and or outdated medications within hospital policy and procedures.
Improves and oversees pharmacy cleanliness for maintenance and appearance and for the safety, health, and well being of customers and employees.
Assures proper operation and maintenance of pharmacy department equipment.
Controls expense items, and obtains approval for major expense items.
Responds to customer inquiries and complaints; maintains and improves overall image of the pharmacy department.
Maintains and develops good working relationships with physicians and other health professionals.
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Pharmacist leadership experience required. Two years experience as Pharmacist in charge or similar leadership position at a retail pharmacy or discharge pharmacy preferred.Education:
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy required. Pharm D preferredLicensure/Certification/Registration:
Licensed by the State of South Carolina Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist in good standing requiredSpecial Skills:
Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staffs required.
Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule required.
Ability to set priorities, makes decisions, and responds quickly to emergency requests required.
Ability to assist the pharmacist in meeting the pharmaceutical needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult,
and geriatric patients required.
Attention to detail with high speed efficiency and accuracy required.Physical Requirements:
Requires repetitive use of hands and fingers (use of computer keyboard) and manual dexterity (use of syringes, etc.)
Requires lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes, IV solutions, etc.
Requires stooping or kneeling (e.g. to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers).
Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours is often necessary). Requires frequent and prolonged periods of viewing computer screens (order-entry, billing, etc.).
Requires normal range of hearing and vision in order to communicate and perform effectively.
Requires intense and consistent concentration with attention to detail, and requires speed and accuracy.
Requires operation of mechanical and electrical equipment, and listening to low levels of noise.
Generally this person will work in a well-lighted, well-ventilated, heated, air conditioned environment under secure working conditions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; frequently to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 15 to 20 pounds of force occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time), and/or 5 to 10 pounds of force frequently , and/or greater than negligible up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Normal range of hearing and vision to perform work and communicate is required. Other demands include intense and constant concentration, equipment operation and listening to low levels of noise.
