  Grade:UNAC Grade 30

Work type: Faculty Full-time, On Campus

  Administrative Unit:University of Alaska Fairbanks

School/Business unit:UAF College of Nat Science & Math

  Location: Fairbanks

  Categories: Education/Instructional, Research/Science

Position Summary:The University of Alaska Fairbanks is America’s premier Arctic research institution and we are seeking two tenure-track faculty in cryospheric science at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Both positions will be joint appointments with UAF's Geophysical Institute (75%) and the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, Department of Geosciences (25%). These faculty will carry out externally funded cryospheric research as members of the Snow and Ice and Permafrost research group at the Geophysical Institute and will teach core courses in the newly established Earth System Science graduate degree program as well as cryosphere-related courses in the undergraduate Geoscience program. Candidates will be expected to undertake public, professional and University service activities.

The Snow, Ice, and Permafrost group at UAF's Geophysical Institute is one of the world's leading centers of cryospheric research. We have all realms of the cryosphere on our doorstep, but our group carries out model-, remote sensing-, and field-based research throughout Earth's polar and alpine regions. Members of our group also commonly practice knowledge co-production with members of Arctic communities. Faculty members are responsible for establishing externally funded research programs and expected to collaborate with other faculty members across campus and with other institutions.

The Department of Geosciences offers B.S. degrees in Geosciences and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth System Science, Geophysics, and Geoscience. Its unique-in-the-country graduate classes focusing on snow, sea ice, glaciers, and permafrost allow Earth System Science students to earn degrees with a focus on the cryosphere. Mentoring graduate students allows our faculty to develop an effective and productive connection between academics and research.

To thrive in one of these positions, candidates must be self motivated and invested in the academic and professional development of students and early career researchers. They must be able to use their knowledge of one or more domains of the cryosphere to develop a successful externally funded research program and inspire the next generation of researchers. The majority of research carried out by the Snow, Ice, and Permafrost group is highly collaborative, so an ability to work across disciplines and as part of a team will be advantageous. An ideal candidate will have experience working with a diverse student population, an understanding of how to develop compelling research proposals, and a desire to advance the frontiers of cryospheric knowledge.

  Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Geophysics or related field. Some teaching and mentoring at the college level is desirable.
