  The Stanford University Department of Comparative Medicine represents a distinct discipline of experimental medicine whose mission is to advance human and animal health through outstanding research, veterinary care, and training. Within this dynamic setting, there is an opening for an Animal Care Assistant IV. The Animal Care Assistant IV provides advanced care and husbandry for a variety of animal species in complex facilities. The employee also provides daily administrative and technical support to the supervisor including scheduling and confirming transfers and receiving new arrivals, as well as checking alarm logs, scheduling appointments and putting new Key Tracer entries into the database. The employee will assist with drafting, editing, and reviewing SOP’s, entering data into multiple online inventory management databases, preparing and digitizing various documents, and processing orders and shipments.

  The Animal Care Assistant IV also provides daily direction to lower-level animal care technicians responsible for animal husbandry. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to leading co-workers in the performance of their individual tasks which includes explaining job duties, assisting with completion of tasks, relaying requests from the Animal Care Supervisor and confirming by inspection that jobs have been completed correctly. The employee will check attendance, schedule room assignments if needed, adjust weekend schedules, and schedule Animal Trax transfers and deliveries to satellite areas. May be requested to conduct assigned duties or duties of other workers including but not limited to on weekends or holidays in the event of absence of the worker(s). The Animal Care Assistant IV must lead and motivate staff to achieve the results and standards according to regulatory requirements, and as set by the Supervisor or Manager. The Animal Care Assistant IV will complete an Occupational Health Surveillance Questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and immunizations.

  Additional duties include assisting with standard maintenance and QA/QC of a wide variety of large machinery, equipment, and environmental systems to include basic troubleshooting and calibrating, minor maintenance, inspecting equipment for proper operation, validation, reporting broken or damaged supplies and equipment and reporting needed facility repairs to the supervisor or managers.

  This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment

  Schedule: Monday- Friday

  DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  Associate degree and AALAS certification preferred.

  Minimum of five years of experience in a laboratory animal.

  Familiarity with OLAW and U.S.D.A. guidelines.

  Ability to read, write, understand, communicate, and follow written and oral instructions provided in English.

  Experience with the use and maintenance of large animal facility related machinery.

  Strong computer skills with a demonstrated ability to work with Microsoft Office and email applications are required.

  Experience working with a web-based applications such as inventory management.

  Ability to work independently as well as on a team and possess a strong sense of personal accountability.

  Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and personal standards of cleanliness, neatness, and organizational skills.

  Ability to establish productive relationships within a diverse research community that reflects a strong “client service” commitment is essential.

  EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  High School Diploma or GED.

  Five years of applicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory environment or a combination of equivalent education and work experience

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  In addition to the qualifications described for the Animal Care Assistant III level the Animal Care Assistant IVs should have:

  Training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal Technologist certification of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

  Computer experience in order to create and/or maintain records, spreadsheets, inventory systems and other documents.

  CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

  When driving, must have a valid California non-Commercial Class C license.

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  Often lift and carry materials weighing up to 40 lbs.

  Frequently handle materials up to 20 lb .Occasionally carry/pull up to 60 pounds, push over 60 pounds

  Walk/stand for long periods.

  Bend, squat, reach above shoulder level.

  Often use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.

  Required vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception.

  WORKING CONDITIONS:

  May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

  Work in direct contact with animals and all components of animal housing and animal research environment.

  May be exposed to dust, fumes or gases, chemicals or toxic substances.

  UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  The Animal Care Assistant should be free of animal-related allergies and willing and able to undergo a physical examination and all required immunizations. Must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds. Must observe and support good health and safety practices regarding the use of chemicals and equipment.WORK STANDARDS:

  When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

  The expected pay range for this position is $35.41 (Step 1) to $42.63 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
