The Residence Life Department has openings for RESIDENT ASSISTANTS beginning AUGUST 2024 through MAY 2025.
Job Responsibilities:
Actively work to establish and maintain appropriate relationships with residents: knowing their name, location, personality
Assist residents in conflict mediation and resolution
Refer students to campus and community resources as necessary
Work to assist students in their adjustment to collegiate life at Newman University
Be visible, accessible, and available throughout the week, not solely during assigned duty nights; maintain frequent contact with residents
Promote and demonstrate respect for all genders, ethnicities, sexual orientation, and races
Administrative Tasks:
Check your Newman University email and respond to all emails from Residence Life Staff daily
Plan, advertise, and implement at least one program per month inclusive of your living community.
Program proposals and evaluations are to be filled out for each program
Update monthly calendar per month.
Address students in violation of university policies and/or in violation of local/state/federal laws
Complete incident reports after addressing policy violations
Make and hang door decorations a minimum of once a semester for each resident in the assigned living area
Work four office hours, practicing customer service and answering all duty calls and using this time to work on any Residence Life projects the RA may have (door decorations, bulletin boards, programming planning, etc.)
Shift Details:
Serve as on-duty staff member one set day per week (Monday-Thursday) and four weekends (Friday-Sunday) per semester; weekday duty is considered 8:00 pm - 9:00 am the next morning
At 9:00 am the following morning, the RA on duty will hand the phone and keys over to the Desk Assistant for the day
**RAs are not permitted to leave campus or their residence hall during weekday duty nights, as they are expected to have a significant presence in the residence halls and use the time to complete RA tasks.
RAs are responsible for weekend duty from 5:00 pm Friday to 9:00 am Monday (class permitting)
During this time, RAs are to perform four sets of rounds, the last at or around 2:30 am
Weekend duty RAs for each area of campus may coordinate with one another so one may leave campus to be within a ten-minute radius of campus for no longer than 1 hour
This privilege can be revoked by the Director of Residence Life
RAs may not be on duty during any competitions or performances (athletic, musical, etc.) in which they are participating that would cause them not to be able to immediately respond to a call
If necessary, the RA will be responsible for finding a replacement prior to that night
RAs are expected to perform their duty on their regularly scheduled duty night; however, should an emergency arise the RA can find a replacement and request to switch
Housing assignments are ultimately determined at the discretion of the Residence Life Director
Time Expectations
RAs will have weekly staff meetings lasting approximately one hour
RAs will have weekly 1:1 meetings with the Director of Residence Life lasting less than an hour (these take place during Office hours)
RAs remain on campus when the residence halls are officially open unless prior approval from the Director of Residence Life is given. RAs will not be permitted to leave at the end of each semester until the buildings have been properly closed.
RAs may be required to remain over breaks and vacations when the halls are open, including Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, and Easter
RAs may not hold over 20 hours per week of combined non-academic extracurricular activities that include but are not limited to: religious service attendance/small group participation, on- or off-campus job(s), musical practices, musical performances, athletic practice, and athletic competitions
Requirements:
Minimum week availability: 5 - 10 hours
Enrolled as a full-time student for the upcoming year (minimum 12 credit hours per semester)
Reside in a room on campus for the duration of the position.
Previous experience living on-campus (strongly considered)
Arrive August 8th, 2024 for training
Leave after May 11th, 2025 to close residence halls after Commencement

Days and times needed: Varies, includes evenings and weekends
