Can you edit a good piece to make it great? Do you have an attention to detail that catches even the smallest grammar mistake? If so, you're what we're looking for in our next writer/editor. As part of the Carlson School's award-winning, high-performing Marketing & Communications team, you will play an active role in finding and sharing important stories with internal and external audiences that advance the school's strategic priorities. Based on the collaborative relationships you develop, you will use digital and print channels to create/distribute newsletters (that even faculty members want to read!), copy that pushes prospective students toward enrollment, and powerful stories about the outstanding people that make up the Carlson School community. Additionally, you serve as a protector of the brand by providing proofreading and editing across a wide variety of pieces. This role reports to the associate director of strategic communications. The salary range for this position is $58,000-$62,000 depending on qualifications. JOB DESCRIPTION Editorial Writing (30%) Mine the organization for compelling story ideas. Pitch interesting ideas that fit into content strategy and/or advance strategic priorities. Write articles for the news section of the school website, bi-annual alumni magazine, and bi-annual faculty research magazine, among other channels. Research and interview, as needed, to craft accurate and compelling stories. Post articles, with photo and graphic elements, to the school website via Drupal CMS. Apply trends and best practices to pursue new approaches to storytelling that connect with key audiences Schoolwide Communications (25%) Lead production, including content planning, writing and editing, vetting, graphic and digital content creation, and distribution - using the school's email marketing platform (Salesforce Marketing Cloud, SMC) - of three monthly newsletters ("Inside the Carlson School," "Faculty/Staff Accomplishments," and "Board of Advisors"). Serve as primary back up to email marketing strategist on SMC. Create, post, edit, and track signage for digital monitors and physical displays in the Carlson School flagship building and Hanson Hall. Use software program(s) for digital signs. Coordinate content, processes, and software usage among other authorized users across the school. Support communication and marketing efforts for schoolwide events such as All School Gatherings and other events. Serve as point person for Marketing & Communications department's presence on the school's intranet. Recruitment Marketing Copywriting (20%) Write and edit copy in support of the school's recruitment marketing initiatives aimed at prospective graduate students. Channels include but are not limited to web pages, ads, emails, and viewbooks. Collaborate with team members, as needed, to develop and execute creative concepts that comply with project specifications and meet client objectives. Proofreading and Brand Stewardship (15%) Serve as lead proofreader for Marketing & Communications team, executing the current process with eye toward opportunities to enhance it. "Own" the Carlson School written style guide, enforcing its contents and updating it as needed. Foster compliance with the Carlson School Visual Guidelines. Interpret and apply University of Minnesota style requirements to Carlson School marketing materials. Use DEI Viewfinder tool while reviewing content. Ensure that all internal communica ions are consistent with the school's brand and messaging. Project Management (10%) Prioritize and manage concurrent projects that support the execution of team and school goals. Complete projects on time and on budget. Other duties as assigned. * The employer reserves the right to change or assign other duties to this position * Qualifications MINIMUM / ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree plus a minimum two years of marketing communications writing experience or a combination of education and experience totaling 6 years. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, or related field. Editorial writing experience for a newsgathering organization or on behalf of a for-profit or non-profit organization. Promotional or advertising copywriting experience. Sound understanding of marketing, communication, and brand strategy principles, with demonstrated experience holding people accountable for executing the principles. Ability to develop creative concepts that translate into effective, multichannel, well-organized written marketing communications materials. Command of various writing styles and techniques that employ sound language usage and grammar.
