Earnings Potential: $1 54,724 – $203,076

RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, the Vice President (VP) will have considerable autonomy to exercise independent judgment and decision-making. The primary role of the VP is to act as the central point of contact and driving force in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing a unified vision and future direction for all safety programs and initiatives within B&T. This includes the redefinition of fundamental safety values for stakeholders within B&T and the broader contractor community.
The VP will take on the responsibility of cultivating organizational capabilities and fostering a safety-oriented culture to address both current and future organizational needs. This involves the dissemination of information, sharing best practices, and building strong intra- and inter-departmental relationships to ensure a consistent and effective approach to safety. Additionally, the VP will oversee safety programs, ensuring compliance with all Federal and State safety requirements. There will be a particular emphasis on instilling and maintaining a culture of working safely across all Authority work locations, with a focus on reinforcing the critical role of safety for both employees and customers.
Collaboration with the Construction Safety Officer and Director of Traffic Engineering is essential to ensure a comprehensive and cohesive safety approach throughout the Authority. The VP will manage a team of professionals engaged in field activities related to safety and, as a senior member of the Authority, will provide technical assistance and advice to staff at all levels, emphasizing the prioritization of safety.
In addition to overseeing positions directly under their supervision, the VP will coordinate with other key stakeholders and draw upon Authority resources as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of this role. This position is integral to maintaining and enhancing a robust safety framework within the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in engineering, fire safety, environmental or occupational safety, ergonomics, chemical, physical, or biological sciences, industrial hygiene, safety management, or a related field.
Fifteen (15) years of experience in occupational safety & health and environmental safety, with expertise in traffic safety and employee safety in construction and industrial settings.
Seven (7) years of supervisory experience.
Unrestricted driver's license in New York State.
Demonstrated experience in hazard mitigation and accident analysis and investigation.
High level of proficiency with MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Expert knowledge of safety, health, and environmental regulations/standards such as OSHA, NIOSH, ACGIH, RCRA, TSCA, water and air quality regulations, especially asbestos & lead.
Proven track record in developing and implementing successful safety programs and initiatives.
Demonstrated leadership experience in managing teams and fostering a safety-oriented culture.
Strong analytical skills for overseeing safety analyses, hazard identification, and effective hazard mitigation plans.
Ability to organize and manage diverse projects in geographically dispersed locations.
Effective response and professionalism in emergency situations.
Strong organizational, communication (oral, written, presentation), and interpersonal skills for teamwork and building consensus.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address complex institutional issues in Safety & Health programs and projects.
Strong interpersonal abilities for fostering cooperation among individuals and entities, coupled with effective team management skills.
Capacity to identify and review complex problems, evaluate options, and implement strategic solutions.
Commitment to staying informed about industry best practices, academic research, and government regulations to enhance safety programs continuously.
Adaptability to evolving safety requirements, technologies, and organizational needs.
Willingness and ability to travel to various facilities as needed.
Ability to respond and report to any MTA B&T facilities 24/7 in case of emergencies.
Preferred
Advanced degree in environmental engineering or a related field.
Professional certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
