  Description of Work

  This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Sampson County. This supervisory position will be required to work in diverse working environments performing various general maintenance operations. The recommended applicant will supervise a roadway maintenance crew that is working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of a roadway maintenance crew that is involved in pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Position will investigate and answer concerns from the public .

  Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew

  Additional Responsibilities:

  Employee will be responsible for supervising the activity of a roadway maintenance crew on State maintained roadways in Sampson County. Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks within a given budget. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments to plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship, conventional density). The employee must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

  Pre-employment drug screening is required for this position. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed, allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety Toe Shoes are required.

  May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency.

  Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.   High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
