  Position Statement:

  The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates are sought with expertise in emerging and transformative areas of geotechnical engineering, who also have interests in collaborative research and who can teach and mentor a diverse student population. Potential areas of research interest include but are not limited to: coastal geotechnics, sustainable energy and energy geotechnics, smart cities, geotechnical impacts of climate change and sea level rise, geotechnical flood protection systems, unsaturated soil mechanics, environmental geotechnics, and biogeotechnics.

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful applicant will: 1) Establish an externally funded research program in geotechnical engineering and related areas; 2) advise, mentor, train, and support graduate students; 3) advise, mentor, train, and support undergraduate students in research and professional development; 4)  work with government agencies on basic and applied research; 5) work on interdisciplinary teams to tackle pressing problems in geotechnical engineering; and 6) promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline, Department, and University. 

  About UD: The University of Delaware provides an outstanding research base for interdisciplinary research. Within the Department, research programs exist in structural, environmental, coastal, transportation, civil infrastructure, railway, and construction engineering, with a strong focus on sustainability in the built and natural environments. The Delaware Environmental Institute (www.denin.udel.edu), the Delaware Center for Transportation (sites.udel.edu/dct), the University of Delaware Energy Institute (dei.udel.edu), the Mangone Climate Change Science and Policy Hub (sites.udel.edu/climatechangehub/), the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (sites.udel.edu/ceep), and the Disaster Research Center (https://www.drc.udel.edu/)are ​ ​ catalysts for interdisciplinary research in the areas of infrastructure, environment, and energy on campus. The state-of-the-art 194,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (www1.udel.edu/iselab) provides a focal point for research and teaching on campus.

  The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has ​ 33 ​ faculty members, approximately 400 undergraduate students, and 120 graduate students. The Department has state-of-the-art facilities and instruments for laboratory and field experiments and computing.

  Qualifications Required:

  An earned doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field at time of appointment

  Promise in success in securing competitive external funding

  Success in scientific/engineering research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications

  Capacity for, ​ or demonstrated ​ excellence in, teaching and mentoring

  Excellent written and oral communication skills

  Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline, Department, and University

   Qualifications Preferred:

  Post-doctoral experience

  Record of external competitive funding

  Experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses

  History of interdisciplinary collaboration
