About Substitute Public Transportation Drivers

  Job Overview

  This position transports individuals, regardless of age, disability, gender, or income, primarily to out of town medical appointments within a specified radius while providing a high level of customer service and direct assistance as needed. This position may also be called upon to provide local service within a pre-designated area including, but not limited to, delivering meals as part of the Home Delivered Meal Program.  

  * Essential Functions*

  Customer Service -- Responds to requests for transportation. Communicates and interacts with customers, fellow drivers, and all staff members to ensure safe and expedient pick-up and drop-off of passengers. Assists passengers in boarding and disembarking as required, including assisting with packages as necessary. Collects fare donations and/or punches pre-purchased ride tickets. This position must use sound judgment and discretion in determining the balance of assisting clients with errands/shopping as well as completing additional duties in support of the department.

  Transportation Vehicle Safety -- Ensures transportation vehicles are clean and free of debris utilizing onboard cleaning supplies. Performs maintenance checks via established checklist and procedures. Ensures all items are safely stowed to prevent injury in case of accident. Secures safety equipment, such as but not limited to fire extinguisher, biohazard cleaning kit, and stepstool.

  Home Delivered Meal Program - Picks up meals at Fallon Medical Complex and delivers to recipient's physical address; performs general welfare check when delivering noting any changes in behavior, health, and/or mental acuity. Reports issues/concerns to the Director or emergency personnel as warranted.

  Record Keeping -- As required by funding for the transportation program, maintains passenger lists, boarding records, and daily logs with record of mileage and transportation vehicle operation time. Assists with completing all reports required by the Department of Transportation, including entering data into software programs.

  This position requires strong and consistently safe driving skills to ensure the safe transportation of clients. Must possess the ability to read maps and navigate various road conditions, including but not limited to snow packed and/or icy conditions. Requires the ability to accurately assess and respond to emergency situations. Must exercise sound judgment in all areas of responsibilities, such as balancing the needs of customers with safety concerns and utilizing time for the benefit of the department and County.

  Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and professionalism to effectively interact with a variety of personalities and demands of the public, resolving customer questions and concerns with courtesy and respect. Ability to communicate assertively when determining schedule restrictions; willingness to remain within and follow established program guidelines and approved tasks. Ability to explain detailed and complicated information in simple, understandable terms. Must listen actively and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand; explain rules and procedures clearly.

  Demonstrate initiative, common sense, and good judgment. Ability to work with little direct supervision; to understand, interpret, and follow instructions and directives. Self-directed with ability to meet deadlines when unsupervised. Take accountability for own actions. This position must function as part of a team, working for the betterment of the department, its programs, and the public.

  Safety

  Safety is a primary duty and a personal responsibility. County employees are responsible for reading, understanding, and following safety rules and procedures as identified within County Policy, our Safety Program as well as at each department/work location/JSA. This position is responsible for wearing PPE as identified in the JSA or when working in areas where there is danger of injury. Responsible for wearing suitable work clothes as determined by the Director. Reports all injuries, hazards and/or near misses utilizing established reporting forms and procedures. Knows the location of first aid kits, fire extinguishers and other safety devices. Attends all safety meetings including annual training. This position will not perform potentially hazardous tasks or use any hazardous material until properly trained.

  *Supervisory Responsibility*This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  * Work Environment*This position completes most of the work while operating a public transportation vehicle.

  Required Education and Experience **Employment with Fallon County requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be of age. Must be able to safely operate a 13 passenger ADA cutaway bus as well as a minivan. A demonstrated safe driving history is required.

  * Preferred Education and Experience*

  Prior experience in a transportation program is preferred.  **

  *Additional Eligibility Qualifications*Must possess or obtain a Montana driver license within thirty (30) days of employment. This position will have unsupervised contact with the elderly and/or disabled and is subject to a pre-employment criminal background check, pre-employment controlled substance testing, and a pre-employment motor vehicle driving history review. Upon employment, this position is subject to random, on-going alcohol and controlled substance testing.

  Compensation

  The wage for this position is $16.50 per hour. Please note this position is not eligible for a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment).

  Position Type/Hours of Work

  This position will work as available and needed to substitute for the Public Transportation Driver and/or in response to the needs of the transportation program. Work typically occurs Monday through Friday, typically between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The needs of the program may result in working hours outside of this schedule.

  * Physical and Environmental Demands*

  While performing the essential functions of this position, may be required to sit for long periods; will also stand, walk, use hands and fingers, climb or balance, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, speak and hear. May be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
