The Legal Resource Center for Public Health Policy, situated at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, is seeking a Staff Attorney(full-time non-tenure track position with payroll title of Research Fellow, Research Assistant, or Research Associate depending on selected candidate’s qualifications). Position Description: The Staff Attorney will provide legal technical assistance to state and local public health departments and other executive agencies, legislators, law enforcement, government attorneys, community-based organizations, and judges and judicial staff in Maryland on a broad range of cannabis law and policy issues. Essential duties include but are not limited to providing brief telephone advice, preparing written responses to requests for assistance, developing educational resources and policy papers on specific issues, tracking and summarizing state and federal cannabis legislation and regulations, developing model laws and policies, and conducting in-person and virtual training sessions. The position may include extensive in-state travel. Other reasonably related duties may be assigned. Minimum Qualifications: · J.D. from an ABA Accredited school. · A member in good standing of the bar of any U.S. state or territory, registered for the February 2024 bar exam, or willing to sit for the July 2024 bar exam. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: · Familiarity with basic concepts of public health law. · Knowledge of cannabis law and policy. · Familiarity with basic concepts of administrative regulations and processes. · Experience with the Maryland General Assembly and/or the Maryland Department of Health and/or Maryland county health departments is value-added. · Excellent research, writing and oral communications and presentation skills. · Excellent coordination and organizational skills. · Ability to work independently and coordinate the work of others. · Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals. · Ability and willingness to travel as needed. · Ability to work with a wide range of people, including students, government and industry representatives, and members of the general public. · Openness to critical feedback and sincere desire to learn and grow as a professional. This is a grant-funded position and subject to continuation of funding. This position is in-person in Baltimore, with the opportunity for remote work two days a week consistent with University policies and subject to approval of supervisors. Salary: · Starting salary range is $60,000 to $85,000 based on experience. Entry level attorneys will start at $60,000. · Starting salaries are set in accordance with the University’s framework, which considers multiple individual and organizational factors, including internal equity.
