About Software Development Engineer, CloudWatch, Amazon Monitoring and Observability

  Description

Come and build the future with us as we change the way the world sees the Cloud!

CloudWatch is an observability service built for developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers. CloudWatch collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, providing a unified view of AWS resources, applications and services that run on AWS, and on-premises servers. Customers use CloudWatch to set high resolution alarms, visualize logs and metrics side by side, take automated actions, troubleshoot issues, and discover insights to optimize their applications, and ensure they are running smoothly. The CloudWatch team in Dublin is growing and we are looking for exceptional software development engineers to create the next generation CloudWatch experience.

CloudWatch is one of the largest real time data platforms in the world, processing more than 13 quadrillion metric observations per month! This requires teams in CloudWatch to innovate at an unprecedented scale. In CloudWatch we love giving customers what they want: high quality, highly usable, highly available services. It’s humbling and energizing to work with excellent, dedicated engineers to build and deliver world-leading service monitoring solutions at AWS scale.

We’re looking for a new teammate who is enthusiastic, empathetic, curious, motivated, reliable, and able to work effectively with a diverse team of peers; someone who will help us amplify the positive & inclusive team culture we’ve been building.

CloudWatch is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC) that provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Within AWS UC, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) roles engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

  Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Engineer for the CloudWatch organisation, you will be responsible for:

Work in an agile team to design, build and maintain highly available and massively scaled systems used by millions of users world wide.

Design and implement complex software with the highest quality for the services you and your team own.

Help expand our services across all AWS Regions.

Dive deep on operational issues to understand root cause and apply fixes to avoid repetition of events.

  Mentor junior engineers.

  A day in the life

  Work/Life Balance

Our team puts a high value on work-life balance. We believe striking the right balance between your personal and professional life is critical to life-long happiness and fulfilment.

  On-Call Responsibility

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

  About the team

  Inclusive Team Culture

Our team is intentional about attracting, developing, and retaining amazing talent from diverse backgrounds. Yes we do get to build a really cool service, but we also think a big reason for that is the inclusive and welcoming culture we try to cultivate every day.

  Mentorship & Career Growth

Our team is dedicated to supporting new team members. Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and Amazon tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy mentoring more junior engineers and engineers from non-traditional backgrounds through one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews.

We care about your career growth. We try to assign projects and tasks based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

  About AWS

  Diverse Experiences

AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.

  Why AWS?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating — that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.

  Inclusive Team Culture

Here at AWS, it’s in our nature to learn and be curious. Our employee-led affinity groups foster a culture of inclusion that empower us to be proud of our differences. Ongoing events and learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences, inspire us to never stop embracing our uniqueness.

  Mentorship & Career Growth

We’re continuously raising our performance bar as we strive to become Earth’s Best Employer. That’s why you’ll find endless knowledge-sharing, mentorship and other career-advancing resources here to help you develop into a better-rounded professional.

  Work/Life Balance

We value work-life harmony. Achieving success at work should never come at the expense of sacrifices at home, which is why flexible work hours and arrangements are part of our culture. When we feel supported in the workplace and at home, there’s nothing we can’t achieve in the cloud.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

  Dublin, D, IRL

  Basic Qualifications

Experience (non-internship) in professional software development

Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems

Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design

  Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

A passion for high scale, real-time, data-driven, monitoring and observability systems.
