Career Opportunity:
The Shift Supervisor-Shipping has rotating shift leadership responsibility related to team members, safety, environmental, quality, cost, and performance of a shipping department operating crew. This position directs and coordinates efforts and activities on shift to achieve key performance metrics that support overall mill goals to ensure on-time delivery of products to customers. The Shift Supervisor-Shipping reports to the Manager-Logistics.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead and direct shipping shift operations in a safe and orderly manner to achieve safety, quality, and productivity goals.
• Coordinate shift activities optimum production and utilization of personnel, machines, and equipment.
• The ideal candidate will be a team-builder, action-oriented individual, and have the ability to lead and hold people accountable.
• Serves as coach and counselor for department employees regarding performance.
• Lead and manage accountability and labor relations with direct and indirect reports through coordination and consultation with both the Human Resources and Shipping Manager.
• Lead and manage the shift operations of the shipping department including:
• Follows all safety rules and practices and enforces the same with direct reports.
• Manage safety and housekeeping efforts for the shipping and warehouse areas. This includes but not limited to incident investigations, reporting, LOTO, audits, and employee engagement.
• Conduct weekly Production/Safety meetings with departmental personnel
• Assures final roll labelling, condition, and loading meet all required quality parameters for finished product.
• Prioritizes and assigns work, and monitors safety, quality and quantity of the work performed.
• Supervise lift truck Operators in the daily routine of loading trucks and railcars properly, neatly, and damage-free to the customer’s complete satisfaction.
• Schedules shipments and dock times.
• Adheres to daily production schedule. Makes recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality, delivery and service goals.
• Coordinate to schedule runs in the most cost-efficient and time-saving manner possible.
• Attend daily Scheduling Meeting and assist the Scheduler in meeting our customers’ requirements.
• Orders materials, parts, and supplies as required.
• Prepares work orders and coordinates repairs of shipping department equipment on shift.
• Communicates department and plant goals.
• Enforce corrective action procedures when applicable and conduct meetings with the violating
employees and union representatives.
• Implements continuous improvement projects and cost reduction ideas.
• Manages trailers and railcars for optimum utilization through use of LoadExpert
• Ensures employees perform required inspections and tests.
• Prepares and maintains accurate records. Prepares and submits reports as required by Shipping
Manager.
• Keep upper management informed of problems or situations that may affect the performance of
the department.
• Communicate and coordinate with necessary supervision to avoid problems between shift
changes.
• Establish high morale within department by showing fairness, consistency, an interest in
employee problems, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Develop strong rapport with railroad and drop yard crews.
• Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, including the union contract, safety program, and good housekeeping.
• Additional duties may be assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written instructions.
• Ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of management.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to
interpret an extensive variety of instructions, both oral and written.
• Demonstrated communication skills (written/oral).
• Manages performance and holds others accountable to deliver results.
• Experience working with hourly represented employees
• Competent in computer applications, such as Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and ability to
learn proprietary software programs, including JDE.
• Must have working knowledge of production management systems (i.e. Panther; LoadExpert, Pi,
DMS)
Education/Training/Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate degree (AS) or bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) preferred.
Three (3) or more years related shipping / supervisory experience and/or training in the field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
