Position Summary
Major Duties/Position Responsibilities
Target Participate in the design of multi-slice rotating graphite target systemThermal analysis for the single and multi-slice rotating target systemSupport FRIB Operations by maintaining and preparing the target systemBeam dump Thermal analysis for mini-channel and rotating beam dumpDevelop advanced materials for beam intercept devices (Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to successfully perform the position
Thorough knowledge of target and beam dump systems in heavy ion acceleratorHigh level of expertise in the materials science fieldAbility to use an electron microscope that produces an image of the material for studying radiation damageAbility to perform thermal/mechanical simulationsAbility to design experimental instruments with scientific toolsAbility to perform shift work periodicallyExcellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences

Required Degree
Doctorate -Physics or material science
Minimum Requirements
PhD in Physics or material scienceRecord of accomplishment in the field of expertiseExperience in thermal analysis with scientific software (COMSOL multi-physics of ANSYS fluent)
Desired Qualifications
Experience with software and hardware for instrument design and fabricationExperience at experimental research projects, data analysis, physics interpretations and reporting of the results
