This role is part of a core team of high-level research scientists that formulate and define the major project scope and objectives in a distributed clinical and research environment with deep understanding of Center aims and regulatory requirements. This position requires in-depth level subject matter knowledge with associated responsibilities including developing research plans, grant submissions, data analysis, site visits, and publications, with the aim to increase overall department efficiency. This position is an expert in the field in rigor and reproducibility in research, performing analysis, arranging/refining the way work is performed, and streamlining processes to exceed standards set by the NIH and high-impact journals - continuously improving process and resource allocation within PCRC using creativity in a rapidly changing environment. Specific examples of responsibilities include: 1. Grant writing/preparation: a. Pre-review of PCRC grant applications for scientific content and approach b. Interface with PI and Statisticians to complete data analysis and figure generation 2. Manuscript Writing: a. Supervise scientific teams and students at all levels in preparing data, reports, and manuscript drafts b. Interface between scientific teams and independent statistical review to complete data analysis and figure generation c. Create small working groups to develop work plans and tasks for documents produced by students, review and edit these documents. 3. Research conduct: a. Conduct a large research project or a combination of small projects and coordinate analysis, evaluation and report on phases. b. Design original protocols and procedures involving advanced concepts 4. Model development/validation: a. Development and validation of SOPs and technologies to ensure scientific rigor and reproducibility of all published data b. Animal model validation and development c. Develop and validate new approaches or scientific techniques 5. Collaboration and Supervision: a. Serve as an expert resource to lab members, outside collaborators, and the scientific community in animal modeling and associated supporting methods, and alternatives b. Control and evaluate expenditures of research funds under the direction of the PI c. Serve as a project lead/coordinator for active proposals with in depth understanding of specific aims, study measurements, and outcomes/endpoints. d. Analyze experimental data to test hypotheses and interpret results in preparation for reporting, publication and presentation. e. Direct and supervise undergraduate and graduate students to assist in preparation and performance of studies. f. Instruct and supervise new personnel in various lab technologies and techniques g. Interpret complex data and advise PIs and others (e.g. collaborators, industry partners) on research techniques, procedures, and research results. Qualifications Required Qualifications: 1. PhD in a biomedical field and with a substantial research and publication record 2. Expertise in translational animal modeling 3. Knowledge in standard laboratory techniques (ELISA, flow cytometry, RIA, and rapid clinical analyzers) 4. Expertise in writing peer-reviewed publications and interfacing with editors and responding to reviewers 5. Ability to connect and communicate well within a team environment involving clinical and PhD investigators Preferred Qualifications: 1. Prior supervisory responsibilities 2. Experience with research regulatory bodies (i.e. IACUC membership) 3. Experience in development/testing of surgical models 4. Strong background in behavioral management techniques in nonhuman primates 5. Demonstrated ab lity to work independently according to standard operating procedures 6.
