ResponsibilitiesCharacterization of mRNA export pathways in protozoan parasites Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma cruzi. To conduct experimental procedures as part of ongoing research projects geared towards understanding mRNA processing and export in trypanosomes, protozoan parasites responsible for Sleeping Sickness in Africa and Chagas disease in the Americas. To execute and assist in the planning and analysis of research experiments. Will report to a senior research scientist in the Obado laboratory. The central dogma of molecular biology highlights the simple flow of genetic information, that DNA is transcribed into RNA which is exported out of the nucleus and translated into protein in the cytoplasm. Several components of the transcription-export complex in trypanosomes are cryptic and unknown. Furthermore, RNA export pathway in trypanosomes is evolutionarily divergent from those of its vertebrate hosts as evidenced by the composition and architecture of the trypanosome nuclear pore complex (NPC). Work in Dr. Obado's laboratory focuses on uncovering key components of the mRNA export pathway and determining the structure function relationships between nucleocytoplasmic transport and the divergent trypanosome NPCRequirementsRequired Education/Experience:Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, or related field. One (1) year's relevant research lab experience (e.g. molecular biology).Preferred:- Working knowledge of one or more of the following: tissue culture, immunofluorescence microscopy or biochemical and molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, affinity capture, and protein purification)- Familiarity with programming languages for data science- Experience in statistical analysis of dataMin to Max Hourly Salary$21.94 - $32.90 /hrMin to Max Annual Salary$45,635.20 - $68,432.00 /yrSalary InformationThis compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year).
