Position Summary
The El-Shamayleh lab at Columbia University's Zuckerman Institute is seeking a full-time Research Technician to participate in developing viral vector tools for studying neural signal processing in the visual cortex. Under supervision of the PI and/or more senior lab members, the research technician will participate in viral vector production and assist in various projects in the lab. Candidates with a strong academic background and research experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply: molecular biology (DNA purification, cloning, PCR, etc), cell culture, histology, and microscopy. Additionally, the position will involve routine lab management, such as ordering supplies and maintenance of equipment. A commitment of at least 2 years is preferred. This role is grant funded.
Responsibilities
As directed by the PI assist with experiments involving: DNA cloning, cell culture and viral vector production.Performing general lab duties such as ordering supplies and maintenance of equipment.Making general lab solutions, such as buffers.Providing supervised technical assistance to investigators.Assisting other lab members with performing relevant techniquesMinimum Qualifications
BS in biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or a related field. A minimum of 6 months or more experience is required in a research environment. Knowledge of basic genetics obtained from college-level coursework.Working knowledge of basic chemistry.Bench lab-related experience.Preferred Qualifications
Prior hands-on laboratory experience with cell culture, molecular biology, virology and/or biochemistry is highly desired.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Excellent organizational skills and ability to keep detailed notebook.Familiarity with standard chemistry and biology techniques (i.e. solution making).Ability to perform work in a neat and orderly manner in accordance with safety regulation and standard lab protocols.Motivation to learn and develop new techniques and skills.
