The primary purpose of this position, RECREATION ASSISTANT, GS-0189-05, is to assist the Fitness Director and Facility Manager performing duties as required to support the mission of the Fitness Program. Responsibilities - Perform as a personal trainer and instruct both scheduled and nonscheduled fitness aerobics classes as directed by the Facility Manager. - Assure cleanliness of gymnasium facilities such as courts, cardio and weight room equipment, rest rooms, and locker rooms. - Ensure proper patron eligibility and safety rules and policies are observed. - Operate an electronic cash register. - Participate in required in-service training and maintain currency, capability, and certification to perform as a personal trainer, fitness instructor and to administer first aid, use AED and CPR. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0189, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series. ONLY EXPERIENCE OBTAINED BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given them the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04), pay band or equivalent. Examples of specialize experience include (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aide or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aide or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Note: In-service applicants can qualify with at least 1 year of specialized experience at either the next lower level (GS-04) or the second lower level (GS-03). However, for outside applicants (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service), 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level is required. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Good working knowledge of a variety of sports and recreation activities to assist with recreational activities. 2. Knowledge to assist participants in different physical activities in order to provide a well-balanced program. 3. Good working knowledge of exercise and fitness equipment to be able to demonstrate the proper use of equipment. 4. Basic knowledge to develop fitness programs utilizing the resistance equipment. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves physical exertion when participation in activities, bending, lifting heavy items (weight equipment, stooping, etc). Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds when demonstrating equipment. Work requires strenuous efforts in demonstrating equipment and exercise. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The program involves risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions typical of various sporting events. Work areas are adequately lighted; heated and ventilated. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY: If position has a positive degree requirement or education forms the basis for qualifications, you MUST submit transcripts with the application. Official transcripts are not required at the time of application; however, if position has a positive degree requirement, qualifying based on education alone or in combination with experience, transcripts must be verified prior to appointment. An accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education must accredit education. Click here to check accreditation. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
