POSITION PURPOSE
Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation (Rare Care) is a program at the University of Washington Botanic Gardens dedicated to conserving Washington’s rare native plants. Rare Care partners with public agencies to plan and carry out monitoring, research, and restoration activities to conserve vascular plant species in Washington.
UWBG Rare Care has an internship available for the summer of 2024 for a qualified person seeking hands-on experience in plant sciences and land resource management fields.
The Rare Care intern (Research Aide 1 (NE H NI CNU)) will contribute to an effort at Mount Rainier National Park to identify and relocate priority populations of rare native plants in the park. At Mount Rainier, there are 17 vascular plant species that have state or federal status or are ranked as state or globally sensitive. However, many of these species were confirmed in the park based on single samples collected a century ago with vague or inaccurate location information. There are an additional 28 species that may occur in the park but have never been confirmed. Improving Park records to accurately document species locations is a critical step in conserving Cascade vegetation species and meeting the mandate of the NPS to preserve nature for generations to come.
