Optum AI is UnitedHealth Group’s enterprise AI team. We are AI/ML scientists and engineers with deep expertise in AI/ML engineering for health care. We develop AI/ML solutions for the highest impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. In addition to transforming the health care journey through responsible AI/ML innovation, our charter also includes developing and supporting an enterprise AI/ML development platform.

Optum AI is chartered to drive value on high impact enterprise AI problems, democratize AI through the enterprise ML platform, accelerate the adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) and drive Responsible AI. Projecting to deliver $8.4B of benefit value over the next 5 years through these efforts as well as reduce risk through safe, accurate, and unbiased AI, this is a key focus of the enterprise.

Primary Responsibilities:

Program Development and Planning:

Lead the delivery and planning of healthcare AI/ML programs, aligning them with organizational objectives and healthcare regulations

Collaborate with healthcare professionals, administrators, and stakeholders to define program goals, milestones, and deliverables

Strategic Leadership:

Provide strategic leadership for healthcare AI/ML programs, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and vision

Identify opportunities for program expansion, improvement, and innovation to enhance outcomes and organizational impact

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Build and lead cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration among AI/ML data science and engineering teams, project managers, and other stakeholders

Coordinate efforts to integrate program activities with existing healthcare services and initiatives

Budget and Resource Management:

Develop and manage program budgets, ensuring financial sustainability and adherence to fiscal guidelines

Allocate resources effectively to optimize program outcomes while maintaining compliance with healthcare financial regulations

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement:

Act as the primary point of contact for program-related communications, ensuring clear and consistent messaging to internal and external stakeholders

Engage with AI/ML teams and partners to enhance program visibility and support

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

Oversee program activities to ensure adherence to standardized delivery processes

Collaborate with healthcare professionals and regulatory experts to implement and maintain program-specific best practices

Monitoring and Evaluation:

Implement monitoring and evaluation processes to assess program effectiveness and impact

Utilize data-driven insights to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or 5+ years of equivalent work experience

5+ years of experience in large project / program management delivery

3+ years of leadership and strategic planning skills with a focus on healthcare program development

Ability to travel up to 10%

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in Program Management (e.g., PgMP) or Project Management Professional (PMP) with a healthcare focus

Experience in managing complex healthcare programs or healthcare system integration projects

Experience with AI/ML project delivery

Experienced with project management tools and software

Familiarity with healthcare technology and data analytics

Solid communication and interpersonal abilities, especially in engaging diverse healthcare stakeholders
