Upwork is looking for an experienced and strategic Principal Product Manager to contribute to strategy, identify new big bets, and lead delivery of highly interdependent product capabilities for our Work Management product area. Work Management is the heart of Upwork and it is instrumental to both sides of our marketplace (client and talent) interacting with each other to form a working relationship, and subsequently complete their jobs to be done through partnership on Upwork. We believe that stellar customer experience starts with robust platform capabilities.
The Principal Product Manager will partner with the Director of Product, UX Design teams, UX Research, and Engineering to contribute to the vision and user experience for the future of Work Management. Developing products to support multiple geographies carries with it many challenges, especially for a core product capability that touches most other products within the ecosystem, as such candidates with experience delivering software at scale are preferred. After clients and talent match on Upwork, Work Management begins and manages the user journey through to contract completion, including the capture of feedback and sending to the relevant teams. You will report to the Director of Product Management, Work Management.
Your Responsibilities: You will help execute the monetization strategy for Upwork, balancing the needs of both clients and freelancers while maximizing revenue growth. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, data, marketing, and sales, to provide innovative solutions that create value for users and achieve our goals. You will develop an understanding of the competitive landscape and identify opportunities for differentiation and growth. These learnings will contribute to our strategy definition with this role acting as a key author. Establish and track key performance metrics, analyzing data to identify trends and inform decision-making. While this is an Individual Contributor role, we are looking for a leader who will provide mentorship, guidance, and direction to other product managers to ensure their success and growth. You will lead with influence to inspire your product development team to solve new problems; without managing, you will be responsible for driving the roadmap definition forward alongside UX, UX Research, and Engineering. Develop and maintain a product roadmap, prioritizing features and enhancements based on customer needs, market trends, and business objectives. Contribute to product vision and collaborate with UX Research to identify market changes, user problem areas, and new business opportunities. Translate marketplace and enterprise requirements into generic platform capabilities that encompass core product platforms and associated customer experiences What it takes to catch our eye: Proven experience executing global, large scale products with complex technical requirements. Ability to synthesize complex data and identify actionable insights to tell a succinct data story. Experience managing high-performing teams of variable skill sets. Ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels, including executive leadership. Familiarity with the freelance and gig economy landscape, with a passion for creating economic opportunities for people around the world. Experience with Agile development methodologies and an understanding of software development best practices. Prior experience in a two-sided marketplace or a similar platform-based business. An understanding of the Upwork platform and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. Experience with international markets and the nuances of different regions. Proven track record of solving user problems by delivering technically complex and highly visible projects concurrently, while contributing to strategy and long term vision for Work Management. Due to the interconnectedness, you must have strong collaboration skills and assertive project ownership to drive results across multiple other product lines and cross functional leaders.
