  Montana State University Billings is a preferred employer in the region-WE WANT YOU!The following are reasons why you should join our team:•Work-life balance•Holidays-10 paid holidays per year and General Election Day•Vacation- 15 days per year (New Employees to 10 years; after 10 years the accrual rate increases)•Sick Leave - Earned at an accrual rate of .0416125 for each hour in pay status.•Employee and Dependent Tuition Waiver•Opportunities to engage in professional development opportunities•Committed to employee wellness and access to a robust Employee Assistance Program•Medical Benefits that are robust and affordable•Visit MUS Benefits to learn more about our benefit package includingoMedical, Vision, and DentaloLife Insurance and Long Term Disability are incorporated into our benefits.oLearn more about our retirement benefits at MUS Retirement.•Opportunities for career growth and a variety of career paths•Campus vibrancy- coffee shops, FREE attendance to MSUB concerts, athletic events, and lectures, access to recreation center, library, etc.•Beautiful campus environment that features our MSUB Mile walking pathDuties and ResponsibilitiesUNIVERSITY LAW ENFORCEMENT•Conduct criminal and non-criminal investigations•Deliver crime prevention and personal safety education presentations•Mediate disputes•Maintain public order, protect lives and property•Respond to criminal behavior and calls in a timely, efficient and professional manner•Enforcement of Federal, State and Local laws along with university policies•Provide for the safe and convenient flow of pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic in and around our university community•Prepare written reports and other documentation as required•Present evidence and provide oral testimony in legal proceedings•Enforce university parking rules/regulations • Provide law enforcement assistance to other agencies•Perform other law enforcement duties as assignedEMERGENCY RESPONSE•Respond to medical, fire and other emergency situations (i.e., alarms, bomb threats, disturbances)•Respond to pedestrian and traffic accidents•Respond to resistance and aggression appropriately while making arrests•Perform other emergency response activities as needed and assignedCAMPUS SAFETY & SECURITY•Conduct routine motor vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols•Assist with security at various university functions (i.e., sporting events, concerts)•Conduct building security checks•Assist Facilities Services with fire code inspections•Maintaining/inspecting fire extinguishers•Locking and unlocking buildings•Perform other campus safety/security duties as assignedQUALITIES:•Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely under various conditions and circumstances•Ability to evaluate situations and use good judgement•Ability to use discretion commensurate with lawful authority (i.e., search and seizure)•Ability to interact professionally with a diverse campus community•Conduct oneself both on and off duty with the highest degree of integrity and honesty•Excellent decision-making skills in high-stress and urgent situations•Excellent verbal and written communications skills•Knowledge of State of Montana criminal law, traffic law, and Rules of Criminal Procedure through Montana Code Annotated•Knowledge of Municipal codes and university policies/procedures•Knowledge of state and federal laws•Knowledge of University Police Department policies/procedures (i.e., Use of Force)•Knowledge of fire safety codes•Knowledge of university parking rules/regulations•Knowledge of University geography•Knowledge of other law enforcement agencies operating in/around Yellowstone County (i.e., Billings Police, Yellowstone County Sheriff, Highway Patrol, F.B.I./A.T.F.•Proficiency with firearms (handgun and rifle)•Active shooter trainingPOSITION REQUIREMENTS:•University Police Officers may be exposed to life-threatening situations and risk of injury during high risk calls for service such as: barricaded subjects, burglaries, bomb threats, gun calls, drug and alcohol overdose, domestic disturbances, fights, and mentally ill persons.•Officers respond to emergency medical situations, which may put them at risk for contact with blood borne pathogens.•Officers may also be exposed to dangers involving hazardous materials and fires.•University Police Officers are required to work in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.•University Police Officers are required to work 12 hours, rotating shifts, including night shifts, and overtime. Shifts cover a 24-hour period, 365 days a year including holidays.•University Police Officers’ work often involves walking, running, pursuing fleeing subjects on foot, climbing stairs, and physically restraining and handcuffing persons who may be resisting or combative.•Possession of a valid and insurable Montana driver’s license•Maintain annual firearms and CEW/Taser qualification•Maintain CPR, First Aid, Narcan, and AED certificationPHYSICAL DEMANDS:Must be able to pass a D.O.T. physical, drug screen, psychological testing for fitness for duty as a police officer, and have other physical characteristics (vision, hearing, etc…) commensurate with the ability to perform the job of a police officer.Education Required: High School Diploma or GEDEducation Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or other relevant field of studyExperience Preferred: Successfully complete Montana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Police Officer Training or EQ Challenge and has obtained Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification as a Peace Officer.Montana State University Billings is committed to providing a working and learning environment free from discrimination.
