ABOUT THE PORTLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT: With an authorized strength of 158sworn officers and 59 civilian staff members, the Portland PoliceDepartment is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Maine. Inaddition to responding to more than 80,000 calls for service each year,the Department fields an experienced Criminal Investigations Divisionincluding a forensics component, a robust Community Policing Unit, aregional Emergency Communications Center and a substantial number ofspecialty teams/special capabilities. Specialty teams include aHazardous Devices Unit, Dive Team, Crisis Negotiators, Special ReactionTeam, and a Canine Unit. Special capabilities include a nationallyrecognized Mental Health Co-Responder Program as well as accidentreconstruction, arson investigation, and victim services. The Departmentalso provides patrol services on Peaks Island and at the PortlandInternational Jetport and assigns personnel to the Maine DrugEnforcement Agency and an FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Be a high school graduate or equivalent and haveeither two years of post-high school employment or three years ofpost-high school education or a combination of education and employmenttotaling three years. Additionally, you must have a valid driverslicense, a good driving record, and good mental and physical condition.
