  Job Description

  WHO WE ARE

At the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) our work is about protecting Michigan’s environment and that work spans research, monitoring, regulation, education, and community engagement. We are equally passionate about creating a positive, professional, and supportive work environment where we value our differences and are committed to being open and respectful of all our employees and the public we serve.

We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.

  WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Drinking Water and Environmental Health Division (EGLE DWEHD) and the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) have accumulated a wealth of PFAS data from sampling water wells across Michigan during compliance monitoring and investigations related to PFAS sites of contamination

This project would involve developing a heat map for the entire state utilizing this data to provide a picture of:

  Where sampling has been done

  Where PFAS contamination has occurred

Where gaps exist in EGLE’s sampling efforts

This effort would provide a valuable tool in:

Identifying priority areas for private well sampling for PFAS not associated with known or suspected sources of contamination

  Identifying unexpected areas of impact

Contributing to a better understanding of background levels of PFAS in the environment

Responsibilities may be regional in some cases, rather than state-wide, allowing interns to focus on a section of the state near their home or school.

This internship isfully remote, however interns are expected to pick up and set up their EGLE issued equipment at a physical EGLE district office.

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student’s academic schedule and the needs of EGLE’s Environmental Health and Safety Team

Students seeking academic credit for this internship experience must work with their academic institution and the internship supervisor to coordinate any required paperwork or project tracking requirements.

  Internships are nonpaid experiences
