As an integral part of the Ophthalmology Clinic, the Optometric technician provides assistance to the medical staff in accordance with established protocol. The Optometric technician will assist with training patients on the use, care, insertion and removal of specialty lenses. The technician will also assist with obtaining appropriate authorizations and completion of appropriate documentation to ensure requested services are covered. He/she will liaise with insurance payers and departmental business representatives as needed. The optometric technician will ensure that supplies for trial lenses are maintained and cleaned as needed and keep the clinical/patient services area clean and clear of clutter.
Essential Duties:
Performs all necessary tests and patient work up to facilitate accurate diagnosis of patients by physicians including: History taking Visual Acuity Lensometry
Obtains external records and documents ocular history, allergy and medication history in accordance with hospital standards
Assists with contact lens trainings; instructs patients with proper contact lens handling, cleaning and care
Coordinates visits for new patients, including, obtaining necessary records, appointment facilitation and referral authorizations.
Coordinates and processes authorizations/pre-certifications, verifies benefits pertaining to specialty lenses, office visits, external referrals or any other services needed for patient care
Notifies patients promptly of their benefits and obtains signatures on ABNs (commercial and Medicare)
Performs basic maintenance of instruments and equipment to ensure they are clean and facilitates timely inspection of equipment by appropriate hospital department
Performs inventory of assigned exam rooms to ensure adequate supplies. Stocks and orders supplies as needed
Provides back-up support to front office as and when needed.
Travels between clinic sites as and when needed .
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Assists with maintaining a clean patient care area and assists with maintaining optical dispensary as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Req High school or equivalent
Req 2 years Experience in optometry services or related field.
Req Must have excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently.

Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)The hourly rate range for this position is $26.39 - $44.88.
