  The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division leads the LANL Global Security mission in: detecting and preventing the development or use of nuclear weapons and improvised nuclear devices; reducing and limiting nuclear arms and the spread of nuclear and radioactive materials, technology, and expertise; providing the capability and conducting critical, subcritical, and fundamental physics measurements to develop and maintain the Nation's Nuclear Safety and Security Expertise, and; conducting research and development that supports the nation's energy security.

  We are seeking nuclear engineers who want to make an impact in one or more areas of our Global Security mission. The division accomplishes this mission by fostering a work environment that encourages creative problem solving, teamwork, and passion for the mission while allowing flexibility in the work assignment.

  NEN Division has 4 groups with the following focus areas:

  Safeguards Science and Technology (NEN-1): Focuses on the safeguard nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material. This group also has an extensive training program to teach methods of nondestructive assay measurement and analysis. These courses are taught internally, nationally and internationally.

  Advanced Nuclear Technology (NEN-2): Conducts research, development, training and operations in the application of passive and active nuclear measurement techniques, as well as radiography. Applications of primary interest to the group include national emergency response programs, intelligence support activities, and international treaty verification. NEN-2 also conducts nuclear criticality research supporting basic research in nuclear chain-reacting systems and contributing to arms control and treaty verification, waste assay, safeguards and accountability, nuclear energy, and environmental restoration.

  International Threat Reduction (NEN-3): Applies expertise in nuclear and radiological material and commodities detection, packaging, capacity-building, modeling and simulation to reduce nuclear proliferation and enhance global security in a changing threat environment.

  Systems Design and Analysis (NEN-5): Provides modeling and analysis capabilities to design and evaluate the potential risks of complex systems. Additionally, the group evaluates proliferation risks in the nuclear fuel cycle and makes recommendations for enhancing safeguards.

  What You Need

  Minimum Job Requirements:

  Technical R&D Experience

  Demonstrated experience conducting collaborative experimental R&D in the nuclear engineering in at least 1 of these areas: development of radiation detection equipment, remote detection, nuclear safeguards, analysis of gamma and/or neutron data, international nuclear policy, nuclear reactor design, nuclear system analysis, experiment design/optimization, nuclear data validation, reactor experiments, sensitivity/uncertainty analysis, radiation transport simulations, and/or arms control. Demonstrated experience applying nuclear engineering techniques and analysis to solve complex problems.

  Communications

  Excellent writing and communication skills, as evidenced by publications and the cover letter. Experience in working effectively both independently and in a team.

  Team

  Demonstrated history of collaborating effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, ages, and skill sets. Experience working effectively independently and in a team.

  Work Environment

  Demonstrated record of fostering a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

  Proposal Writing

  Experience in the proposal process with US Government sponsors

  Education/Experience

  Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Advanced degree preferred.

  Desired Qualifications:

  Experience developing project plans and leading small interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement solutions

  Experience developing successful proposals

  Advanced degree

  Active Q Clearance

  Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

  Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

  Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

  New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

  Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

  Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

  Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
