  GENERAL PURPOSE

  Perform truck and/or trailer maintenance and repairs of a complex nature, ensuring that equipment is available and in optimal operating condition. Demonstrate mastery of shop technical duties, perform highly technical or intricate diagnostics and repairs, and may specialize in areas such as refrigeration, electronics, emissions, etc. Work under minimal supervision, exercising judgment and discretion in resolving issues or making repairs.

  JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform vehicle and preventive maintenance, component replacements, and repairs of a complex nature

  • Advise management and other mechanics on shop repairs

  • Perform remote triage with drivers to determine best solution to assist roadside breakdowns

  • Maintain, repair, inspect, and/or replace brakes, steering mechanisms, springs, air bags, lights, air conditioners, water, fuel, oil, air filters, coolant and chemicals, transmissions, tire air pressure, tire tread, tires, chassis, drive lines, u-joints, air tanks, batteries, air lines, power cords, wipers, mirrors, drive train components, or other equipment as necessary

  • Perform facility maintenance duties

  • Use shop management system and other electronic systems available

  • Diagnose mechanical and electronic problems, using diagnostic computer when applicable

  • Identify root cause of failures/conditions and perform repairs as required

  • Interact with drivers to properly determine nature of complaint once assigned a task

  • Work in accordance with all federal, state, and corporate compliance guidelines (e.g., safety, DOT)

  • Complete work orders and paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, maintaining high quality standards in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP’s)

  • Respond to accidents or inoperable vehicles to transport equipment back to shop for repair, if appropriate

  • Keep management informed of safety, operator, and equipment observations and concerns

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, utilizing continuous improvement mindset

  • Maintain a clean, sanitary and safe work area which may include wearing of all required personal protective equipment in designated areas, confined space safety, safe chemical handling, fall restraints, etc.

  • Regularly mentor less experienced mechanics

  • The requirements herein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employee, but is not a complete list of responsibilities, duties, and skills required. Other duties may be assigned as required.

  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • CDL license (Class A preferred)

  • Brake inspector certification (preferred- 49 CFR- Part 396.25)

  • 4 to 6 years of mechanic, maintenance, or related experience

  • Certification and/or License – Mechanic certification, refrigeration license, or other relevant

  certifications or licenses may be required

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong or specialized skill with engines, anti-lock braking system, transmission, diagnostic equipment, and software

  • Proficient computer skills

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of DOT regulations

  • Able to read and understand driver inspection reports

  • Able to advise and assist on complex repairs in a safe and useful manner

  • Able to operate tools, equipment, and peripheral accessories

  • Able to independently access and use internal and external maintenance documents

  • Able to work in a team environment

  • Able to perform tasks and duties without constant supervision

  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Able to exercise judgment and discretion in resolving issues or making repairs

  • Able to problem solve

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
