The Opportunity
The Manager, Internal Communications, Nutrition, supports Abbott’s global Nutrition division’s internal, executive, employee, and special projects communications function. The position reports to the Senior Director of Nutrition Public Affairs. The Manager is responsible for charting internal communications for the division, its 15,000+ employees worldwide, and key functions. The Manager will develop communication strategies, tactics and ensure their execution to support divisional objectives. The Manager working with Public Affairs, HR, and other divisional functions – will align resources and budgets to execute the programs. The Manager also liaises closely with Abbott’s Employee Communications team at corporate to align with the corporation’s overarching internal communication strategy and messages. The Manager is responsible for supporting all of the Nutrition division’s communications needs, including senior leadership communications, special projects communications, Division Executive Vice President meetings and communications, digital communications, and employee resource communications. The preferred location for this role is Abbott Park with Willis Tower as an alternative option.
What You'll Work On
Works directly with the Nutrition Public Affairs team; Divisional Vice President, HR; Program Management Office; and other senior staff to develop employee communications across the global Nutrition business.
Ensures the workforce is educated and engaged on business strategy and priorities to help drive performance and divisional initiatives to achieve goals.
Drives culture change through the development of internal communications programs and materials, helps gain employee commitment to objectives and priorities, and tracks and measures key outcomes.
Manages external vendors and internal creative agencies for the divisional meetings, communications projects and planning globally. This will require significant coordination, interaction and collaboration with the leaders across HR and the Office of Strategy and Project Management.
Oversees the division’s internal communications channels and creates rich and dynamic content and resources that align to company-wide and division-specific objectives; liaises with Abbott Employee Communications to update content on Abbott World, the corporation's primary global communications vehicle and most-visited portal.
Helps drive employee engagement around key third party partnerships, including with Real Madrid, the Real Madrid Foundation, and other entities.
Partners with division HR on priority topics, especially related to employee culture and engagement objectives.
Partners closely with Global Information Services (GIS), Creative Network (Abbott’s in-house creative and design agency) and other functions as needed to ensure resources are aligned in support of strategy, vision and plans.
The Manager is a member of the division’s Public Affairs function and reports to the Senior Director of Nutrition Public Affairs. The Manager will manage budget and agency/vendor resources to further carry out responsibilities.
The Manager with the Division Vice President of Human Resources, the Office of Strategy and Project Management, Abbott Employee Communications and other parts of the Corporate Global Marketing and External Affairs (GMEA) function that support internal and executive comms. The Manager will report into steering committee leadership for special project workstream communications. Many of these communications involve sensitive and complex topics pertaining to scientific, quality and regulatory topics that need to be conveyed to employees worldwide working in a variety of businesses and countries.
The Manager also supports efforts to change and better serve its diverse, worldwide employee base. This includes cultivating relationships with colleagues working outside the U.S.; traveling internationally to execute plans, programs and meetings; and conducting interviews and focus groups with employees throughout the world.
As it is increasingly more difficult to compete for employees' time, the person in this position is also charged with developing strategies to make internal and employee communications more competitive, engaging and social.
Required Qualifications
A bachelor's degree is required, preferably in journalism, English, public relations, or another communications-related major. MBA or Master's degree in communications or related field is preferred.
A minimum of 8 years of experience working in corporate, HR, employee/internal, or change management communications. Experience leading effective employee and executive communications is required, as well as working closely with senior executives on employee communications. Experience managing other aspects of corporate communications is a plus.
The candidate will be a sound strategic thinker with excellent judgment, have experience successfully navigating corporate environments, and with winning the support of others and building coalitions. Strong people and project management skills, and being able to manage multiple projects and related deadlines and details with a consistent commitment to excellence and precision, are required. The candidate must also have experience working effectively across a matrixed environment and reporting structure. Experience with electronic portals and electronic communications, budgets, agencies and contract vendors, and internal services groups is required.
The successful candidate will possess the maturity and executive presence to work comfortably and influentially with the division’s senior management. The person will also have very strong writing, editing, campaign measurement, and presentation-building skills. The ability to communicate complex and sophisticated topics in a concise and understandable manner – whether from the company or directly from its executives – is a necessity.
Travel to multiple domestic and international commercial and manufacturing locations. Anticipated travel of 10-15%.

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
