Position Summary:
The Processing Lab Assistant receives all laboratory specimens arriving from hospital, clinic and branches. Verifies that acceptance criteria are met with regard to patient identification, suitable specimen types, and recommends method of transport/storage. Performs registration and order entry functions as needed.

Essential Functions:
Provides information to providers and phlebotomists regarding specimen requirements and tests.
Receives and processes incoming lab specimens as appropriate.
Assesses all specimens for appropriate labeling, specimen type and shipping conditions.
Performs specimen registration and order entry in the EMR and Laboratory computer systems.
Performs specimen processing and preparation as needed.
May perform testing as assigned and in accordance with established protocols.
Trains new staff members.
Able to work in a fast-paced, high volume environment.
Receives and processes incoming lab specimens as appropriate. Specimen types include but are not limited to blood, urine, stool, and body fluids.
Assesses all specimens for appropriate labeling, specimen type and shipping conditions. Completes event reporting for specimens not meeting requirements.
Performs specimen registration in the electronic medical record and order entry and specimen receiving in the Laboratory computer system.
Performs specimen processing and preparation as needed. Ensures proper specimen type, container and storage temperature for tests performed by Carle lab and those sent to reference labs.
Loads samples onto laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established protocols.
