Job Description
NREL’s Site Operations office is looking for an experienced Fire Protection Technician. The Fire Protection Technician will be responsible for inspecting, testing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of fire suppression systems to include, but not limited to, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire alarm, extinguishers, kitchen hoods, dry chem, AFFF, and special hazard. A working knowledge of system controls and components is a must.
Must have knowledge and experience with the following:
Types of water-based systems and their components
Fire alarm systems and their components
Types of damage and deficiencies that can impact system operation
System inspection and testing frequencies, requirements, and procedures
Use of appropriate tools and test equipment, and working safely with minimal impact on surroundings
Applicable codes and standards, primarily NFPA 72 and 25
Impairments procedures; and reporting of findings.
Basic building features
Must be willing and able to respond in a timely manner, as required by NFPA, to all fire alarm related calls during normal business hours. Be part of a 24/7 on-call rotation.
Additional Job Responsibilities
Develop and maintain service schedules for fire and life safety systems including fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, special fire suppression systems, and miscellaneous fire and life safety systems. Ensure systems are inspected, tested, and maintained at intervals required by applicable DOE, NFPA, and fire codes.
Develop and maintain Preventative Maintenance program.
Perform job walks, inspect, and test wet pipe and dry pipe sprinkler systems; inspect standpipe systems, fire pumps, tanks, and fire mains for evidence of damage, deficiency, or impairment.
Coordinates testing with other trades and specialties as needed. Prepares related records, reports, and reviews permits.
Provide site-wide fire protection services across all campuses.
Perform fire detection inspections on new installations per NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.
Inspect, test, and repair systems such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, and fire alarm control panels.
Prepare and submit inspection reports and invoices.
Interpret inspection reports and create service tickets or work orders to fix deficiencies.
Perform or escort contractor for periodic inspections, testing, maintenance of fire detection, occupant notification, signal reporting and suppression systems as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards.
Perform or schedule and escort contactors to make repairs for any deficiencies found during inspections and testing.
Actively participates in the work management process and provides input to support continuous improvement.
Cross train in all site areas and responsibilities to provide better overall service.
Monitor inventory and initiate requests for supplies, materials, and equipment.
Stay current with local, state, and national fire codes and regulations (for example International Fire Code, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, ext.).
Work closely with the NREL Fire Protection AHJ to ensure regulatory requirements are met as they pertain to fire and life safety systems.
Work with local fire jurisdictions (fire marshals and fire inspectors) as necessary where required for work, including West Metro Fire Protection District, Mountain View Fire Protection District, and others.
Work with pertinent stakeholders to define and improve the process for planned and emergency impairments of fire and life safety systems.
Support continuous improvement in documenting inspection, testing, and maintenance records.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope in construction, mechanical or electrical technology and 10 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Considerable knowledge of facility systems. Considerable knowledge of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic equipment, and building automation systems. Knowledge of conceptual facility systems design as well as current trends in systems, equipment and materials. Proven leadership skills. Superior troubleshooting skills. Ability to read blueprints. Substantial project administration skills. Excellent written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
NICET Level 2 Fire Alarm Detection and Inspection and Testing certification.
Minimum 5 years of experience installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing fire detection systems per NFPA 72.
Knowledge of Simplex/JCI fire systems.
Strong knowledge of electrical systems.
Must have (or be able to obtain) and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to work independently or as a team and read wiring schematics.
Identify NFPA code and non-conformance issues.
Knowledge of fire stopping applications and systems.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
Strong time management skills.
Know proper use of tools and test equipment to perform testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
Ability to operate a computer and tablet (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
State of Colorado Electrical Journeyman License.
Advanced knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25.
Experience in installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of fire suppression systems per NFPA 25.
Experience in installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of special hazard suppression systems (Dry Chem).
Experience in installation, maintaining, testing, and repair on fire pumps per NFPA 20.
ICC NAFED equivalent license.
Associate degree in electronics
Knowledge of Kidde, Fenwal, Fike, Flamex, Novec, AFFF fire systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Facilities Tech V / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800
